Pompeo Shreds Leftist Narrative That Trump Is a National Security Threat

Share

In their latest attack against the border wall, the left has indulged in a two-fer. Their new ridiculous excuse includes a smear against President Donald Trump.

The claim is that the president himself is the “national security threat.” Because trying to secure our border and all but wiping out ISIS are clear signs of that, right?

But individual leftists aren’t the only ones proclaiming this lunacy. The New York Times jumped into the fray, writing a story that claimed that, after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey, the FBI “began investigating if Trump had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests and was a threat to national security,” reported Fox News.

Trump has been incredibly hard on Russia, so if he is “working on behalf of Russia” they should be the ones using his infamous line of “You’re fired!” His numerous actions against Russia are public knowledge, but still The New York Times opted to run the narrative.

During an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dropped the hammer on that notion. “The notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous.”

But Pompeo didn’t stop there with refuting the nasty accusation. “The idea that’s contained in The New York Times story that President Trump was a threat to American national security is silly on its face and not worthy of a response.”

Do you believe terrorists could use the southern border as an entry point to the United States?

The attack against Trump didn’t stop there. Citing an unclassified State Department report from 2017, “Face the Nation ” host Margaret Brennan asked specifically about terrorists allegedly not using the southern border to get in.

The implication was not only that terrorists were the only possible threat to Americans via the border, but that Trump lied about the lack of a good border barrier creating a national security issue.

Pompeo put that notion to rest. “One of the reasons I’m in the Middle East is to work on prevailing against terror. There are lots of elements of this but border security is a certain and certainly an important component.”

He added, “Margaret, terrorists try to get into our country lots of ways. One of the ways they can come in is across our southern border. What you saw was an unclassified report.”

“Make no mistake about it, terrorists will always find the weakest link. And we need to make sure that the weakest link in our national security isn’t on our southern border.”

In 2016, PolitiFact checked into claims about terrorists entering via the southern border. What they found was that “There have been several reported incidents along the U.S.-Mexico border of several agencies encountering people on terrorism watch lists or with ties (or suspected ties) to terrorist groups.”

“There also have been a number of people from countries associated with terror groups stopped by authorities, although that’s not an indication they’re terrorist infiltrators.” While at the time it was not deemed “a pressing crisis,” the fact remains that it has happened and remains a problem.

NBC reported just days ago that although the couldn’t yet verify the administration’s number, they did find that people listed in the Terrorist Screening Database have been stopped at the southern border. The also noted that such individuals have also been stopped at the northern border with Canada.

They wrote, “Overall, 41 people on the Terrorist Screening Database were encountered at the southern border from Oct. 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, but 35 of them were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Six were classified as non-U.S. persons.”

As for the northern border, they wrote that 91 people in the database were stopped by CDP. Forty-one of those were not residents of citizens of the United States.

In addition, another five immigrants were stopped at legal points of entry, but it is not clear how many of those were stopped at the northern or southern border by border patrol agents who are separate from CBP officers.

President Trump has never claimed that terrorists were the sole reason why a good border barrier was needed. He has cited a number of other concerns, all overlooked by Brennan.

These include criminals from other countries coming in and doing harm to Americans.

Another reason is the humanitarian disaster that occurs when foreigners are encouraged to come through what they believe is a weak border — only to face dangerous conditions to their own health and safety along the way.

But why worry about facts when a good smear will push the narrative? Is it any wonder why so many people in America believe the establishment media is “fake news?”
