Peak Insanity: Avenatti Talking Presidential Run
Michael Avenatti, the attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels, said Wednesday that he is open to challenging President Donald Trump in 2020.
Avenatti responded to a question on Twitter about when he planned to announce a 2020 presidential bid.
The attorney said he would run for office if Trump sought re-election and if no other viable candidate challenged the Republican.
“IF (big) he seeks re-election, I will run, but only if I think that there is no other candidate in the race that has a REAL chance at beating him,” said Avenatti, who has predicted that Trump will resign before the end of his first term.
“We can’t relive 2016. I love this country, our values and our people too much to sit by while they are destroyed.”
In an earlier tweet, Avenatti said “only a street fighter has a chance at displacing the ‘King.’”
Avenatti first gained national attention as Daniels’s lawyer in her legal fight with former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.
Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 in October 2016, allegedly to cover up an affair that Trump had with the adult film star in 2006.
Daniels has sought to nullify a non-disclosure agreement she signed as part of the payoff.
Part of Avenatti’s strategy in the case has been to appear frequently on cable TV news channels like MSNBC and CNN to criticize Trump and Cohen.
His frequent television appearances have generated speculation that he is using the Daniels case as a launching pad for his own career.
Avenatti once worked as an opposition researcher for Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayor and a chief of staff to former President Barack Obama.
