Opinion | Unhinged AZ Rep. Threatens Immigration Officials: 'You Will Not Be Safe'

Share

I have long considered myself a moderate conservative.

There are plenty of left-leaning, Democratic-driven issues I’m willing to have an honest and uncomfortable discussion about.

One of the issues I will never understand or be willing to talk about is border security.

A nation without borders is literally not a nation. Unsecured borders are the complete antithesis of what makes a sovereign nation.

So every time a far-left pundit or Democrat grouses about President Donald Trump’s hard line stance on immigration, I can’t roll my eyes any harder.

But perhaps the saddest part of it all are the lunatic depths the far-left seems to be sinking to when it comes to immigration policy.

What started as misguided ideas have somehow devolved in mindless threats.

Case in point, Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona all but issued a threat against immigration officials after a report from the far-left Washington Post about the Trump administration denying passports in certain cases.

Should this elected official be reprimanded for his comments?

“If you are a US government official and you are deporting Americans be warned,” Gallego said in a tweet. “When the worm turns you will not be safe because you were just following orders. You do not have to take part in illegal acts ordered by this President’s administration.”

What? It’s a stretch to even call that a “thinly veiled” threat.

Gallego is an Iraqi War veteran, so let me salute him for his service.

But his comments directed toward immigration officials are still beyond the pale.

Threatening government officials, such as ICE, who are trying to enforce the law and keep our borders secure is beyond asinine. These are men and women who are putting their lives on the line to make sure the rule of law is upheld in this country. Someone who put his life on the line to protect the country should know better.

If we just debase and cast laws aside because of feelings and emotion, we may as well resort to flinging fecal matter like monkeys.

Perhaps the most frustrating part of Gallego’s rhetoric is that is doesn’t help foster actual discussions about anything. His comments are a dog whistle to people already predisposed to agree with him and an absolute turn-off to people who disagree with him. Nobody’s going to want to meet in the middle to have a discussion when they’re too busy digging their heels onto their side of the line.

There is a lesson to be learned here: Republicans need to go out in droves and vote when it comes times for November’s midterm elections. If the far-left is this deranged when it holds no discernible majority power, imagine what a drop of control would add to that cacophony.

It’s a scary thought. Almost as scary as having a country with unsecured borders.
