New York Times Op-Ed Sides with Waters, Defends Attacks on Trump Administration
Columnist Michelle Goldberg tried to defend discrimination against Trump administration officials Tuesday in an op-ed for The New York Times.
“Treating members of [President] Donald Trump’s administration as ordinary public officials rather than pariahs does more to normalize bigotry than exercising alongside a white separatist,” Goldberg wrote.
She referenced an incident at the Red Hen restaurant in Virginia on June 22 where White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked to leave, as well as the incident when Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was heckled at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, D.C., on June 19.
Goldberg then used the Catholic Church as an example to establish a precedent for her argument.
“Naturally, all this has led to lots of pained disapproval from self-appointed guardians of civility,” she wrote. “The Roman Catholic Church has shamed politicians who support abortion rights by denying them communion. The failure to acknowledge this history is a sign of the reflexive false balance that makes it hard for the mainstream media to grapple with the asymmetric extremism of the Republican Party.”
Goldberg said she’s neutral about how “Trump collaborators” should be treated, but thinks singling them out only “stokes their own sense of victimization.”
“I don’t blame staff members at the Virginia restaurant, the Red Hen, for not wanting to help Sanders unwind after a hard week of lying to the public about mass child abuse,” she wrote.
Goldberg also made blatant and baseless accusations about foreign powers interfering in the 2016 election and began listing her grievances against the commander in chief.
“Millions and millions of Americans watch helplessly as the president cages children, dehumanizes immigrants, spurns other democracies, guts health care protections, uses his office to enrich himself and turns public life into a deranged phantasmagoria with his incontinent flood of lies,” Goldberg added.
She then claimed today’s political escalation is driven by conservatives and went out of her way to defend liberals and the Democratic Party.
“Faced with the unceasing cruelty and degradation of the Trump presidency, liberals have not taken to marching around in public with assault weapons and threatening civil war,” she wrote.
Goldberg ignored the tone of recent comments made by Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California, where Waters encouraged her supporters to harass Trump administration officials everywhere they go. She also failed to mention antifa — a left-wing organization whose supporters use violent means to justify their political ends.
There is also no mention of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise being shot and nearly killed by a Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders supporter in June 2017.
Instead she asserted that all of “cosmopolitan culture” belongs to the left and bluntly tells conservative leaders to go somewhere else.
“As long as our rulers wage war on cosmopolitan culture, they shouldn’t feel entitled to its fruits,” Goldberg concluded. “If they don’t want to hear from the angry citizens they’re supposed to serve, let them eat at Trump Grill.”
