NBC Interviews Wrong Caravan Member, Destroys Her Own Asylum Claim
The latest caravan of migrants making their way from Central America toward the U.S. border has sparked new debate over the immigration problem … but growing evidence also shows that the liberal narrative about the issue is dishonest.
Open border and mass immigration advocates — almost all of whom are on the left — have repeatedly claimed that America has a moral obligation to accept the mass of illegal aliens flowing north.
Highlighting the humanity of the crowd and, of course, focusing on women and children, the establishment media has insisted that the refugees are seeking asylum to escape political oppression, crime, and government persecution.
But it increasingly looks like that narrative just isn’t accurate.
Numerous migrants interviewed with the caravan during their long and sometimes violent trek toward Mexico and then the United States have admitted that they’re seeking better jobs, not protections for personal safety as was previously claimed. One woman in particular, interviewed by NBC, was the right migrant to ask to learn the truth, but the wrong one for the media to continue its myth.

“Among [the caravan] is Karen Aviles,” reported NBC News in a story it shared on Twitter. “She hopes to reach the U.S. and find work to send money back home.”
Other news outlets have reported the same motivations from the mass of illegal immigrants. A trend has emerged: When pressed, they admit that jobs and money are why they’re leaving, not political persecution or crime — and more importantly, they also admit that they’re bringing children with them as a strategy.
“Most migrants said they were aware that jobs were plentiful in the United States, and many said they believed that having a child accompany them might help them avoid long-term detention,” The New York Times reported last week.
“Asked why they had come north, one man after another said ‘trabajo’ — work — in construction, restaurants, landscaping or cleaning,” the newspaper continued.
The Times included quotes of migrants saying the same thing. It’s about money.
Here’s the problem: That isn’t actually a valid reason for receiving asylum under U.S. law.
“Though members of the migrant caravan have been portrayed by the establishment media as ‘asylum-seekers,’ fleeing drug-fueled communities and looking for work are not grounds for asylum in the U.S.,” as Breitbart News reported.
Indeed, the U.S. government’s official application lists valid reasons that asylum can be granted … and “looking for a better job” is nowhere on the list.
Neither is “fleeing drugs.” Asylum is actually limited to cases of persecution over an individual’s religion, identity, and views, or torture and atrocities being carried out by a government.
“An asylum seeker is an individual who meets the international definition of refugee – a person with well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group, who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution,” explains The National Immigration Forum.
Again, “hoping to get a job in the U.S.” just doesn’t meet the criteria.
This means that not only are the motivations of these immigrants being vastly skewed, the migrants themselves seem to have been told wildly inaccurate information about their chances of receiving asylum.
Remember, we already have an immigration process and legally welcome a million new people into America every year. Storming through borders and assaulting police officers while demanding jobs isn’t how it’s done.
No matter one’s views on the issue, it’s likely that many — including the woman interviewed by NBC — are in for a disheartening reality check if they do make it to the U.S. border expecting to be granted entry because they want better jobs.
They’ve swallowed a false narrative hook, line, and sinker … and it looks like a lot of the establishment media and the left has, as well.
