McConnell Scorches Dems After Seeing Kavanaugh 'Smear Campaign'
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell looks, acts and speaks like a more reserved man.
It would be hard to find someone whose first — or even second — description of McConnell would be having “fire in his belly” or “explosive.”
And yet, far-left Democrats seem to have pushed McConnell so far that he certainly had some fire in his belly during an explosive condemnation of the “smear campaign” against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
The normally mild-mannered senator from Kentucky scorched Democrats on Monday while speaking to the Senate.
“Let me start with a quote: ‘I’m going to fight this nomination with everything I’ve got.’ That was the Democratic leader on television mere hours after Judge Brett Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court,” McConnell said right out of the gate.
And the record backed him up.
Back in July, according to USA Today, Senate Democrat Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer said: “I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same. The stakes are simply too high for anything less.”
So far, McConnell hadn’t said anything but the facts. But he didn’t let up off of Democrats.
“Others pledged their opposition before he was even named,” McConnell said. “Before they’d reviewed a lick of evidence. Before they’d heard a minute of testimony. The Democrats had already made up their minds and chosen their tactics: Delay, obstruct, and resist. Whatever it took — whatever the truth really was — they were going to do whatever they could to stop this qualified, experienced, and mainstream nominee.”
Again, McConnell was dead on. Before the sexual assault accusation from University of Palo Alto Professor Christine Blasey Ford surfaced, thanks to Democrat machinations, Kavanaugh’s greatest sin seemed to be the fact that Trump nominated him.
“Senate Democrats and their allies are trying to destroy a man’s personal and professional life on the basis of decades-old allegations that are unsubstantiated and uncorroborated,” McConnell continued. “This is what the so-called ‘Resistance’ has become. A smear campaign, pure and simple. Aided and abetted by members of the United States Senate.”
McConnell really ratcheted up the pressure with his “smear campaign” remark.
Look, I don’t want to denigrate any sexual assault victims who struggle accuse someone out of fear of backlash. And Ford absolutely deserves her moment to speak out.
But the way the Democrats have been going about it, they’re trying to make it seem like Kavanaugh is an abjectly horrible human being based solely on uncorroborated accusations.
McConnell went even further, claiming that Ford wanted anonymity and expediency in any Kavanaugh investigation, but that the Democrats couldn’t stop themselves from turning it into a witch hunt.
“They sat on Dr. Ford’s letter for seven weeks. They kept it secret. They did nothing,” McConnell said. “They bid their time. And then they threw Professor Ford’s wishes overboard and leaked it to the press.”
Ouch. McConnell didn’t let up. And he shouldn’t. Nothing he said was wrong.
Ford and Kavanaugh should both have their chance to be heard, as the accuser and the accused. Until then, Americans, including Democrat senators, should avoid ascribing guilt or innocence to either.
But that’s never been the aim of the far-left Democrats. A smear campaign is so effective precisely because it’s so hard to prove a negative.
The Democrats know this. So too, fortunately, does McConnell. And he’s not about to let them off the hook.
“Before the week is out, both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford will testify before the Judiciary Committee,” McConnell said as he neared his conclusion.
“And I want to make it perfectly clear… Judge Kavanaugh will be voted on here on the Senate floor. Up or down, on the Senate floor. This fine nominee to the Supreme Court will receive a vote in the Senate in the near future.”
How that vote turns out remains to be seen, but McConnell made his feelings about the Democrats’ behavior perfectly clear.
