Hypocrite Mitt Just Trashed Trump, But Turns Out 11 Months Ago He Was Thanking Him
He hasn’t even been officially sworn into office yet, but to some, he is already attempting to fill the void left by the late Sen. John McCain. However, some have equated his move to something outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake would do.
Regardless, twice-failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, now elected by Utah to replace outgoing Sen. Orrin Hatch, is wasting no time in starting the new year off with a bang. His first act was to take a big swing at President Donald Trump.
His scathing Op-Ed in The Washington Post (behind a paywall) was quick to attack. ” … on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions last month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office.”
His attack continued, ” … policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency. To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation. A president should unite us and inspire us to follow ‘our better angels.’
“A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect. As a nation, we have been blessed with presidents who have called on the greatness of the American spirit.”
“With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.”
A number of prominent figures took to Twitter to call out Romney on his attack against a fellow Republican and the President of the United States. Many believe, even if they disagree with him on occasion, that the president has served the United States well, thus far.

I’m disappointed in Mitt Romney. His defining act as an incoming Senator is to criticize Pres. Trump. If Senator-elect Romney thinks Trump is a bigger problem than Nancy Pelosi or Sen. Schumer then he has a lot to learn about how things get done in Washington.

She may be the GOP Chairwoman, but Ronna (Romney) McDaniel is also Mitt Romney’s niece. And even she took him to task over his behavior.

President Donald Trump’s response was fairly tame, all things considered. He called out Romney, but also seemed to hold him to his own standard.
Here we go with Mitt Romney, but so fast! Question will be, is he a Flake? I hope not. Would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a TEAM player & WIN!

But Romney’s decision to attack the president also points to a certain level of hypocrisy on his part. Fox New’s Geraldo Rivera was one of a number of people who pointed this out:

In November 2016, ABC News reported on the infamous Cabinet position dinner Romney had with Trump. Romney said at the time, “I’ve had a wonderful evening with President-elect Trump.”
“We had another discussion about affairs throughout the world, and these discussions I have had with him have been enlightening and interesting and engaging. I have enjoyed them very, very much.”
“He won the general election. And he continues with a message of inclusion and bringing people together, and his vision is something which obviously connected with the American people in a very powerful way.”
In February 2018, Romney was more than happy to accept the endorsement of Trump for his Senate run. He even publicly thanked him for it.

Then in June 2018, the New York Post wrote about how Romney said he believed Trump would easily win in 2020.
“I think that not just because of the strong economy and the fact that people are going to see increasingly rising wages, but I think it’s also true because I think our Democrat friends are likely to nominate someone who is really out of the mainstream of American thought and will make it easier for a president who’s presiding over a growing economy.”
Actor James Woods echoed McDaniel’s sentiment. He also pointed out the hypocrisy coming from Romney.

When rumors first began that the former governor of Massachusetts would run for Sen. Hatch’s seat in Utah and then Romney quickly changed his bio to show Utah as his home location, something else was speculated upon. That speculation was that he wasn’t really interested in serving the people of Utah, but in using the presumed Senate race win to launch yet another run for president, this time against President Donald Trump.
His latest action has only served to keep that speculation alive. On Twitter, more than one person raised the issue.

To many, Romney has already made clear what his intentions will be once he is officially a senator, and that will be to be a thorn in the side of President Trump, giving aid to the Democrats in obstructing much needed changes. Frequently referred to as a “flip-flopper,” time will tell if “Hypocrite Mitt” will follow through on that, or flip-flop over to serving the American people by helping to achieve President Trump’s MAGA agenda.
