House of Horrors: Authorities Sickened After Remains of 11 Infants Found in Ceiling of Funeral Home
Police in Detroit, Michigan found themselves at a former funeral home after the remains of 11 infants were discovered inside the ceiling by construction workers.
Construction workers found the horrifying sight while they were working on the building, as reported by the local WDIV-TV.
The building, which used to be Cantrell Funeral Home, is in the process of being turned into a community center.
There were 11 infant bodies in total, with 9 being stored in a single cardboard box and 2 in small caskets.
Detroit police searched the entire building to ensure there weren’t any additional bodies.

The funeral home was previously shut down in April for improper storage of bodies, according to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
“In April, LARA suspended the mortuary licenses of both the home and its manager Jameca LaJoyce Boone for many violations including the improper storage of decomposing bodies of adult and infants,” Jason Moon, the Communications Director for LARA said in a statement.
In April, WDIV-TV reported the debacle surrounding the funeral home, including reports of “deplorable” and “unsanitary” conditions.
“After first being denied entry to conduct an inspection, an inspector found an unclean and unsanitary embalming room, with peeling and chipping paint, water stained walls, dirty floors, and stained protective gear,” WDIV-TV reported.
Investigators also found bodies “in an advanced stage of decomposition, covered in what appeared to be mold” and “a third body with the facial area covered in unknown fluids.”
Considering the funeral home’s previous conduct, the discovery of the infants’ bodies is less shocking but still completely sickening.
It’s horrifying that a funeral home would keep bodies in those conditions. Families depend on funeral homes to properly handle their deceased loved ones.
Fortunately, LARA will add the new discovery to their ongoing investigation of the funeral home and its manager.
“We will use the evidence gathered today to add to our open investigation and will continue to work with local law enforcement as this case proceeds,” Moon said in the statement.
People need to be held accountable for the funeral home’s awful conduct. Hopefully justice will be served at the end of the investigation surrounding the Cantrell Funeral Home.
