Hispanics Flip the Script When Univision Asks About Honduran Caravan
You’ve probably heard the narrative in one form or another: If you support border enforcement, you’re a horrible racist and probably hate Hispanics.
That implication has never been stronger than right now, as a nearly 10,000-strong caravan of migrants streams north from Central America through Mexico and toward the United States.
The establishment media’s reporting has had both overt and veiled references to racism, with the implication being that anyone who agrees with President Trump — that the migrants should not be allowed to illegally enter America — must be horrible bigots.
But as Univision just found out, that argument just doesn’t hold water — especially when other Hispanics are the ones objecting to open borders.

During a segment from reporter Luis Megid on the Spanish-language and often anti-Trump cable channel, several Hispanic Americans were asked for their thoughts on the caravan. It didn’t go how Univision expected.
“How is it possible that a caravan from Central America is on its way to the U.S. and the people are speaking the way they’re speaking, demanding to get in?” responded one Hispanic man in fluent Spanish.
“No sir, this isn’t their country and they need to respect it,” he pointed out.
Another Hispanic man who Univision said was in Florida echoed similar sentiments. “Entering the U.S. illegally? There’s a process. We’re a country of laws,” he pointed out.
“Like the president says, they can come here, but they need to come here legally like the rest of us,” declared a Hispanic woman.
Even a Honduran woman named Carla, who said she entered the U.S. in a previous caravan, told Univision that she’s changed her view after seeing the huge number of people breaking through border crossings and continuing north.
“With so many people I see it as complicated,” she explained. “It’s not right that so many people are heading to the U.S. in this Honduran caravan.”
To be sure, there were also some Latino voices interviewed by Univision who took a more liberal tone, but the response from Hispanics here in America was much more balanced than many on the left would like you to think.
That’s part of the political story that Democrats using Trump’s opposition to the caravan as a rallying point would rather not talk about. It turns out that even before the recent waves of mass migrants came through Mexico, the president had more Hispanic support than you might expect.
“Are Hispanics shifting their allegiances to President Trump? A recent Harvard/Harris poll recorded a 10-point spike in Hispanic support for Mr. Trump,” reported The Washington Times in July.
“It hasn’t received much attention from the mainstream media, which is heavily invested in its portrait of the president as an unrepentant — and unpopular — ‘nativist,'” the outlet continued.
Trump also received about one-third of the Latino vote in the 2016 election. That isn’t amazing, but it was better than Mitt Romney managed to do in 2012. And remember, this was after the media worked overtime to paint Trump as the worst anti-Hispanic candidate in human history.
The fact that a surprising number of Hispanic Americans are in agreement with the president could be a major factor in upcoming elections. Liberals have doubled down on using immigration as a talking point against Trump, but when it comes to Latinos who actually vote, the issue could swing in the GOP’s favor after all.
