Gov Andrew Cuomo Declares America 'Was Never That Great.' But He Forgot What His Daddy Said
“Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”
The meaning of that idiom is clear: In your haste to lash out, you need to be careful about being so short-sighted that you end up hurting yourself.
It might be time to update that phrase. Here’s a version that seems particularly apt in today’s world: “Don’t undermine America to spite Donald Trump.”
Countless liberals appear to be doing just that. Whether it’s the left tripping over themselves to defend MS-13 or making excuses for violent radicals like antifa out of distaste for the president, “spiting the face” seems to be a Democrat pastime these days.
On Wednesday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo did it again. During a speech meant to take aim at Trump, the elected leader of the Statue of Liberty’s home state made a stunning declaration.
“We’re not going to make America great again,” Cuomo announced, sounding deeply bitter. “It was never that great.”
Print that up and put it on a bumper sticker! “Democrats: We’re not going to make America great again.”
Thankfully, the liberal politician didn’t get away with such an appalling statement unquestioned. Marc Molinaro, a Republican candidate for New York governor, immediately pointed out the ridiculousness of those words.
“America, with its imperfections, has always been great,” the Republican shot back in a statement.
“Our people, our principles, and our promises have been a beacon light to the world for 242 years and counting,” he continued.
Molinaro isn’t the only person who disagrees with Cuomo’s Debbie Downer view of America. The governor’s own father Mario frequently reminded voters about how great New York — and America — were during his time in the spotlight.
“[My mother and father] were able to build a family and live in dignity … in the greatest State, in the greatest nation, in the only world we would know, is an ineffably beautiful tribute to the democratic process,” the elder Cuomo, who served as New York governor for three terms, said in 1984.
During that same speech at the DNC convention, Mario Cuomo called the United States “this great nation.”
Seeming remarkably Trump-like, Mario Cuomo again called America “great” during several speeches, while highlighting the need for the U.S. to lead the world in trade and production. Sound familiar?
“Remember, we became a great nation by making things and selling them to others for their marks and their yens,” he said in 1992 while introducing Bill Clinton, according to The New York Times.
“(W)e have gone from the greatest seller nation, the greatest lender nation, the greatest creditor nation to, today, the world’s largest buyer, the world’s largest borrower and the world’s largest debtor nation,” he continued.
It’s almost like he was urging voters to make America great again. Somebody tell his son Andrew, because the Democrats of 2018 seem to have lost the plot.
