Finally: GOP Senators Move to Investigate Dossier Author
Two top Republicans announced Friday that they are calling on the Justice Department to investigate whether criminal charges should be levied against the British spy who compiled the Trump-Russia dossier.
According to The Washington Times, Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, wrote a letter Thursday to the DOJ requesting an investigation into whether Christopher Steele lied to the FBI about sharing contents of the dossier with the media.
Grassley argued that because some of President Donald Trump’s former campaign members have been charged with lying to the FBI, the bureau should apply that same standard to Steele.
And he’s absolutely correct.
“I don’t take lightly making a referral for criminal investigation,” Grassley said. “But, as I would with any credible evidence of a crime unearthed in the course of our investigations, I feel obliged to pass that information along to the Justice Department for appropriate review.”
“Everyone needs to follow the law and be truthful in their interactions with the FBI. If the same actions have different outcomes, and those differences seem to correspond to partisan political interests, then the public will naturally suspect that law enforcement decisions are not on the up-and-up,” he added.
Graham argued that a second special counsel should be appointed to investigate Steele’s dossier and whether he lied to federal officials about sharing the dossier with members of the media.
“After reviewing how Mr. Steele conducted himself in distributing information contained in the dossier and how many stop signs the DOJ ignored in its use of the dossier,” Graham said.
He added: “I believe that a special counsel needs to review this matter.”
Steele, a former British spy, was paid by the firm Fusion GPS to compile the dossier which made numerous unverified claims suggesting that Trump colluded with the Russians during the 2016 presidential election.
Despite multiple investigations looking into the claim for nearly a year, there has been zero evidence to support the liberal narrative of collusion.
The dossier, which was partly funded by former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and the Democratic National Committee, is nothing more than opposition research.
And more importantly, Clinton’s campaign and the DNC paid nearly $9 million for the dossier.
Considering all of that, Grassley and Graham want to know if the political hit piece was used by the FBI to obtain a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to spy on Trump and his former campaign officials.
This could be one a major political scandal being covered up, and Grassley and Graham are demanding answers.
