Former Anti-Trumper Dons MAGA Hat After Seeing Latest Example of Media's 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'
Glenn Beck, the lachrymose blackboard enthusiast who has severed ties with more networks than Keith Olbermann, can’t exactly be described as a fan of the Donald.
Beck campaigned vigorously for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and then forsook Cruz when he begrudgingly endorsed Donald Trump after Trump became the GOP nominee. He was also one of the so-called “National Review 22,” the 22 prominent conservatives who submitted pieces to the magazine trashing Trump during his campaign. He went on Samantha Bee’s vulgar basic cable affront of political discourse to call Trump crazy. He’s used his radio show and flailing media platform, The Blaze, to more or less do the same.
So, what can get Glenn Beck to doff a Make America Great Again cap? A revelation from the archangel Gabriel? A psychotic break after a three-day sobbing jag? Physical threats from Michael Cohen?
Actually, all it took was the media.
Let’s back up and explain here. Earlier this week, President Trump made a remark that members of the MS-13 gang were “animals.” Many media outlets — most notably The New York Times — picked this comment up and twisted it to make it sound as if Trump was calling illegal immigrants animals.
That provoked a rant from Beck that ended up with him doffing the MAGA cap and predicting Trump would win in a “landslide” in 2020 due to the media bias.
“Here’s why I’m predicting a 2020 win,” Beck said. “What I saw yesterday, how the press was all reporting the same damn story that Donald Trump was calling MS-13 gang members — they left that out of the story — animals, and they were spinning it as if he was saying that about all immigrants — I had enough. I’ve had enough.”
“Media, if you can get me, Glenn Beck, to do this–” he said, putting the signature red baseball cap on, “If you can drive me to the point to where I’ve said, you know what, I’ve had enough, I’ll vote for him in 2020. Gladly I’ll vote for him in 2020. And not really even on his record … But if you can drive me to the point where I’ll wear one of these stupid red hats, I’m telling you, you’re making a gigantic mistake. And I welcome it.”
“He’s one guy,” Beck continued. “You’re a legion of people with global resources, 24 hours a day, hammering one man.
“Just hammering over, and over, and over again. And you don’t believe in your case — you don’t believe that the truth is enough. You’ve just got to make stuff up.
“This is truly Trump derangement syndrome,” he said.
So, is the media apologizing for the “animals” remark? Sort of, kind of not really.
AP has deleted a tweet from late Wednesday on Trump’s “animals” comment about immigrants because it wasn’t made clear that he was speaking after a comment about gang members.

That’s certainly a lot less bombastic than the original tweet, mind you. And The New York Times didn’t even issue a retraction. Instead, the outlet went with a “fact check” that looked at the “context behind” the remark, which anyone listening to it could discern and could recognize was significantly different from The Times’ interpretation.

And while we’re scouring Twitter, it’s worth noting that Trump hasn’t actively tried to court Beck or anything like that. In fact, far from it.
