Footage Inside Classroom Shows Exact Moment Gunman Opened Fire
Cellphone footage captured from inside the South Florida high school where a gunman opened fire Wednesday afternoon shows the very moment the horrifying ordeal began.
Originally made public by the Twitter page for CBS Evening News about 4 p.m., roughly two hours after the shooting began, the video depicted students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County crouching underneath desks as the gunman began firing, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
“The sound of gunfire echoes out across the room as ear-piercing screams ring out. Students are seen scrambling and crouching to the floor and a male student close by shouts: ‘Oh my God, oh my God. Oh my God,'” the Mail reported.
The footage, which is highly graphic and disturbing, may be seen here.
As previously reported by the Conservative Tribune, the shooting began about 2 p.m. The suspected shooter was apprehended by local authorities about 4:30 p.m. in a nearby community off school grounds.
NBC News further notes that 17 were killed and 14 injured, and the perpetrator “has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder” and “may appear in court Thursday.”
Though details regarding most of the victims still remain unknown, Newsweek identified one as student Jaime Guttenberg, another as student Martin Duque, a third as athletic director Chris Hixon and a fourth as football coach Aaron Feis.
Regarding the shooter, it’s been reported he had a troubled family life, due in part to the death of his father more than a decade ago and death of his mother last year, as well as a disturbing obsession with firearms and inexplicable interest in “Syrian resistance groups.”
The BBC reported Thursday morning that the FBI had been warned about the man months earlier over his disturbing social media posts, which includes a YouTube comment in which he wrote, “I’m going to be a professional school shooter.”
School administrators had reportedly likewise emailed the former student’s teachers about his behavior, warning that he wasn’t permitted to carry a backpack on campus.
“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,” said math teacher Jim Gard. “There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”
A Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School official reportedly revealed that the shooter was expelled after he initiated a fight with his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
The student also claimed the shooter had been abusive towards his ex.
