Lock Her Up: FBI Opens Up New Clinton Foundation Investigation
It was chant that could be heard at just about every Donald Trump rally while he was on the campaign trail: “Lock her up!”
Now, according to a report by John Solomon from The Hill, Trump supporters could be closer to having their wish granted.
According to Solomon, the FBI has opened up an investigation to look into whether the Clinton Foundation was involved in pay-to-play politics while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.
“The Justice Department has launched a new inquiry into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in any pay-to-play politics or other illegal activities while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of State, law enforcement officials and a witness tells The Hill,” Solomon wrote.
Agents in Little Rock, Arkansas have begun the investigation and, according to The Hill, interviewed at least one witness last month. Additionally, more “activities” are expected within the coming weeks.
The officials who spoke with The Hill said the investigation “is examining whether the Clintons promised or performed any policy favors in return for largesse to their charitable efforts or whether donors made commitments of donations in hopes of securing government outcomes.”
“The probe may also examine whether any tax-exempt assets were converted for personal or political use and whether the foundation complied with applicable tax laws,” the officials continued.
Of course, the Clintons can’t be too thrilled about the investigation. After all, if the FBI does find wrongdoing, there could be some very serious consequences.
Nick Merrill, a spokesman for the Clintons, called the investigation “disgraceful” and a “sham.”
“This is a philanthropy that does life-changing work, which Republicans have tried to turn into a political football. It began with a now long-debunked project spearheaded by Steve Bannon during the presidential campaign. It continues with Jeff Sessions doing Trump’s bidding by heeding his calls to meddle with a department that is supposed to function independently,” he said.
But is an investigation into the Clinton foundation just a show? I don’t think so, and here’s why.
We know that the Clintons have been paid an exorbitant amount of money for their speaking fees. In fact, in a previous article from The Hill, Solomon says that Bill Clinton was paid $500,000 for a speaking engagement with Russian investors right before the Uranium One deal was complete.
Coincidence? I doubt it. When it comes to the Clintons, there are no coincidences.
Hopefully, the Department of Justice will get to the bottom of this and will prosecute if they find anything nefarious. But if the Clintons are involved, it’s difficult to trust this will happen.
It won’t be the first time they’ve survived the grasp of the FBI. As the Hill points out, “One challenge for any Clinton-era investigation is that the statute of limitations on most federal felonies is five years, and Clinton left office in early 2013.”
Only time will tell how this will all pan out in the future. Hopefully, it ends with Hillary behind bars.
