Dem Congressional Aide Blasts AOC's 'Elitist Nonsense,' Refusal To Answer Constituent Phone Calls
For a politician who rose to fame based on a personality-driven appeal to the masses, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sure doesn’t appear to care about her constituents anymore.
Her offices can’t even seem to answer the phones.
Among the offices of the thirteen lawmakers who represent New York City in Congress, only Ocasio Cortez’s failed to answer phone calls with a real person, according to the New York Post.
Even high-profile Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, had staffers available to pick up calls.
But calls to Ocasio-Cortez’s Jackson Heights office in Queens go straight to voicemail — and callers can’t even leave a message.
When calling the freshman congresswoman’s Washington, D.C. office, the Post reported, “a constituent can maybe get a person on the line if the caller bypasses the office’s unique filtering system that aims to block outside callers from clogging up the phone lines.”
Corbin Trent, a spokesman in Ocasio-Cortez’s office, confirmed to the Post that calls from out-of-district area codes would go to voicemail.
“When you are getting the volume of incoming [calls] that we get, the most important thing is to try to filter out some of the volume to get the people you are actually supposed to be here to work for,” Trent said.
One congressional Democratic aide, left unnamed by the Post, criticized the New York lawmaker for her lack of availability.
“She has no plans to serve the people. That’s why she has no constituent services operation,” the aide said.
“If you’re a grandma in Queens who needs help with her Medicare and you call AOC’s ‘district office’ you get a recording that tells you to visit the website instead.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s unwillingness to allow callers to reach real people is unsurprising. Ever since the freshman lawmaker arrived in D.C., she has eschewed the voters who elected her in favor of chasing media attention with her theatrical performances in committee hearings and news conferences.
“What kind of elitist nonsense is that?” the aide added. “Shameful, it’s all shameful.”
Indeed, AOC has gone from bar-tending underdog hero to Washington elite in a matter of months.
“Elitist nonsense” may be just the perfect phrase to describe her Capitol Hill activity.
The Western Journal has contacted Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment but has not received a response as of this writing.
