Clinton 2020? Hillary Heading Election Fundraisers in Major Cities
Though there are plenty of voters on both sides of the ideological divide who’ve had more than enough of Hillary Clinton over the years, the failed presidential candidate simply refuses to fully fade away from the political scene.
In fact, NBC News just reported that the former secretary of state and 2016 Democrat nominee will be jumping “back into the fray” to help fundraise for the Democrat Party ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
Clinton is reportedly scheduled to headline at least three events on behalf of the Democratic National Committee — to be held in Chicago, New York and San Francisco — events that are being billed as “intimate dinners with discussion,” open for those willing to make a hefty donation to the party.
Sources close to Clinton also suggested that she is planning to hold fundraisers on behalf of certain female candidates. Clinton’s political organization, Onward Together, has also been making contributions to Democrat congressional candidates challenging incumbent Republicans in districts Clinton won in 2016.
To be sure, the Democrats could certainly use some help on the fundraising front, as the latest reports indicate that the DNC is getting trounced in that respect by the Republican National Committee.
NBC reported that the RNC has raised at least $213 million so far this cycle compared to only about $110 million by the DNC, and the RNC enjoys plenty of cash on hand while the DNC is dealing with debt.
Furthermore, while there are plenty of Democrats who would prefer their party move on from Clinton, there is no denying that she still wields influence among a segment of the left; hence she is being called upon to help with fundraising.
Of course, while Clinton can help the Democrats in terms of fundraising, she could also hurt their election efforts as well, and some Republican strategists are wasting no time in cutting ads that tie certain Democrat candidates in competitive districts to the failed nominee, reminding voters of her “deplorables” comment that dismissed half the nation’s population or her corrupt and scandalous history.
“The longer a scandal-plagued Hillary Clinton lingers in American politics, the worse off House Democrats will be,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Jesse Hunt told NBC.
Laughably, some Clinton associates maintain the delusion that Republican targeting Clinton with attack ads is actually a sign of how afraid of her they still are.
As Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill state: “You pay attention to those you’re threatened by. If they didn’t think she was still a force in the party, then they wouldn’t continue to treat her like the president.”
Clinton already lent a helping hand to the DNC in May when she assisted in raising funds at the annual Women’s Leadership Forum gala, and the DNC has already called on past party luminaries such as former President Barack Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder to headline fundraising events this year. (Holder is said to be considering his own run for the presidency in 2020.)
This development could be nothing more than the DNC hauling out the big guns to help lessen the disparity in fundraising this election cycle, and as stated, Clinton can certainly provide some assistance to her party in that regard.
However, given what we know of Clinton’s unbridled ambition for the presidency — which she genuinely appears to have felt that she was owed in 2016 — it is not out of the question to wonder if this re-emergence onto the political scene is a preparatory step toward mounting yet another campaign for the White House in 2020.
We all know that there is probably nothing else in life that would matter more to Clinton than attaining both her goal of the presidency and electoral revenge against the man who stopped her most recent bid cold: President Donald J. Trump.
It remains to be seen if Clinton will be satisfied with merely helping her party attempt to retake control of Congress, or if she has larger goals in mind.
We will have to also wait and see how the rest of her party’s potential 2020 candidates would feel about her grabbing the spotlight once again, now that it is their turn to make a run.
