Chinese Prom-Dress Girl Has Guts, Her Next Move Ticked off Leftists Even More
You have to like her style.
The Utah teenager at the center of the latest clash between sane people and leftist social-justice warriors, aflame with indignation over what an American girl chooses to wear to her prom, hasn’t given an inch of ground to the bullies trying to get her to back down.
But one Twitter post she published over the weekend really said it all.
Kezia Daum, the 18-year-old senior at Woods Cross High School who sparked a sartorial squabble of national proportions with her choice of a Chinese-style dress, announced she has nothing to apologize for because she chose the dress because of her “love for the (Chinese) culture.”
It’s clear, it’s concise, and it has to be completely infuriating to those on the left who’ve gotten used to using guilt to get their way in every question facing society.
It might seem odd that the greatest nation on earth might be convulsed these days over the question of what a teenage girl chooses to wear to a private affair, but that’s the reach the wonders of social media have given to the forces of social conformity.
Before Daum posted pictures of the April 22 event at the Utah State Capitol, the chances are very good that virtually all of America was ignorant it was even taking place.
Thanks to a social justice warrior named Jeremy Lam, though, that quickly changed. An apparently easily offended man of Asian descent, Lam went to Twitter to attack Daum’s dress.
“My culture is NOT your g**d*** prom dress,” he wrote in a post that ended up going viral, and attracting way too much support from the liberal mob.
If Daum had been a liberal executive at an incredibly wealthy, powerful corporation like Google, or possibly the spineless CEO of Starbucks, that kind of appeal to political correctness — and the inherent bullying that it implied — would probably have been enough to have her cowering in contrition.
Instead, she appears to be the kind of American teenager with a clear sense of self-worth and who can — like Florida’s Kyle Kushev — can recognize hideous liberal nonsense for what it is.
Believe it or not, so can the rest of the world — especially the country that would have the most reason to take offense, if any were to be taken.
According to The New York Times, that’s not happening.
“When the furor reached Asia, though, many seemed to be scratching their heads,” the newspaper reported Wednesday (and you know the liberal Times would have loved to say otherwise). “Far from being critical of Ms. Daum, who is not Chinese, many people in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan proclaimed her choice of the traditional high-necked dress as a victory for Chinese culture …”
“It’s ridiculous to criticize this as cultural appropriation,” Zhou Yijun, a Hong Kong-based culture commentator, told the Times, using a Chinese word for the form-fitting dress. “From the perspective of a Chinese person, if a foreign woman wears a qipao and thinks she looks pretty, then why shouldn’t she wear it?'”
An excellent question. Leftists like Mr. Lam (don’t spell it with a “b” or he gets in a snit) would no doubt love to live in a world where superior moral progressives can dictate to the rest of the world exactly what is allowed and what isn’t.
And sometimes — like at the Academy Awards, the Grammys or a White House Correspondents Association Dinner — it looks like they might actually be succeeding.
But then America gets the chance to see an 18-year-old girl with backbone in action, and it reminds the rest of how the country just how insane the left has become these days.
We don’t know much else about Daum, but for that alone we owe her our gratitude.
You might not like an obscenity in a Twitter post. You might even not like the dress she chose for her prom.
But you have to like her style.
