Bad News for Beto: New Poll Crushes 2020 Hopes of Defeating Trump
Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke is a new favorite among those on the left, but he’s still not popular enough to beat President Donald Trump in a hypothetical 2020 matchup.
O’Rourke stole the hearts of many liberals during his failed Senate run against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
The congressman’s permissive stance on illegal immigration is particularly palatable to leftists. Earlier this month, he blamed the border wall for deaths at the southern border.
O’Rourke’s views might be popular among liberals, but a new Hill-HarrisX poll shows that he’d have trouble in a general election.
Trump would beat O’Rourke by 7 points, getting 37 percent to O’Rourke’s 30 percent.
The president’s lead is also well within the poll’s margin of error, which is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
O’Rourke was unable to beat Cruz in his Senate race, so it’s not surprising to see him trailing in presidential polling.
Trump slammed O’Rourke for eyeing the White House in the wake of his electoral defeat. While singing the First Step Act, Trump congratulated Cruz on his victory and mocked O’Rourke’s potential presidential run.
“I thought you were supposed to win before you run for president,” Trump said, which caused laughter throughout the Oval Office.

However, the president faces stronger competition from other potential opponents in 2020, according to the Hill-HarrisX poll.
Trump is down 6 percentage points against former Vice President Joe Biden, the poll found.
Additionally, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has a narrow 1-point lead over Trump.
Regardless, he hasn’t started campaigning yet, and we know from his 2016 presidential campaign that it’s one of Trump’s many talents.
And despite their leads against the president, Democrats aren’t exactly thrilled with Biden or Sanders.
Thirty percent of Democrats chose “none of the above” over the listed potential Democratic candidates in a poll published by The Hill last month.
