AOC No Longer Content with Going After ICE, Takes Aim at Homeland Security

Share

In recent months, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has ramped up her attacks on President Donald Trump and his administration in an effort to paint the president and the law enforcement agents who protect the U.S. southern border as anti-immigrant racists.

Ocasio-Cortez introduced her latest idea in a Friday interview with David Remnick of the New Yorker Radio Hour. After the freshman congresswoman explained to Remnick that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was under the Department of Homeland Security, the host asked Ocasio-Cortez if she would abolish DHS entirely.

Her reply was startling.

“I think so,” the lawmaker said, according to Fox News. “I think we need to undo a lot of the egregious, umm, a lot of the egregious mistakes that the Bush administration did.”

She didn’t stop there, either, issuing a rambling and incoherent defense of her position.

“I feel like we are, at a very, it’s a very qualified and supported position, at least in terms of evidence, and in terms of being able to make the argument that we never should of created DHS in the early 2000s,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Do you hope Ocasio-Cortez is defeated in the 2020 election?

What the freshman lawmaker fails to understand is that without DHS, our national security blanket would be completely shredded.

Later in the interview, Remnick asked Ocasio-Cortez what she thought “sane” immigration policy would look like. She replied that “we should not be using detention for people who have harmed no one.”

She offered no concrete proposals.

So how would Ocasio-Cortez suggest the U.S. government handle the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the border each year?

If she supports abolishing ICE, DHS, and detention facilities, Ocasio-Cortez needs to be asked one more question: does she want open borders?

Despite her remarks to the contrary, none of the congresswoman’s ideas have supported her claim that “[w]e absolutely do need to make sure that our borders are secure,” as she stated in an interview with CNN.

No amount of “secure borders” rhetoric can cover the fact that far-left lawmakers like Ocasio-Cortez have continued to advocate for policies that would weaken the border.

While she hasn’t called for open borders yet, the New York congresswoman is coming dangerously close.

Americans who care about domestic security and the crisis at the border should be concerned.

Thankfully, there’s a democratic channel for combating Ocasio-Cortez’s nonsense: the ability to challenge her for her Congressional seat and defeat her in 2020.
