3 Days After Debut, Roseanne Revival Gets Massive News
The revival of ABC’s “Roseanne” has sparked considerable discussion in both pop culture and political circles, particularly since its titular character has returned as a Trump-supporting Republican convert.
Now, just three days after its Tuesday debut, ABC confirmed that the revival will be coming back for a second season after huge ratings for its first episode.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second season of the revival — and 11th overall — was greenlit by the network days after the auspicious March 27 debut.
“The wild success of Roseanne cannot be stressed enough,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “In a climate where TV reunions, particularly on the sitcom front, are a popular way to cut through the clutter, Barr’s show did one better.
“Its March 27 premiere was the highest-rated scripted broadcast of the season, and the highest-rated sitcom in more than three years. The hourlong opener took a 5.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 18.1 million viewers in one night alone.
“Time-shifting has already driven the episode to 21.9 million viewers and a 6.1 rating after only three days of additional viewing.”
Compare this to the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace,” which started at 10 million viewers and a 3.0 rating, according to The Daily Caller.
The ratings for “Roseanne” were so high, in fact, that they actually beat out the most hyped event of the week, Stormy Daniels’ interview on “60 Minutes,” in the key 18-49 demographic.
“It’s a huge and much needed win for ABC. The No. 4 network, which trails the rest of the broadcasters in large part due to its lack of live sports, did not start its midseason on the most auspicious of notes,” The Hollywood Reporter noted.
“The annual Academy Awards telecast, the marquee night of ABC’s calendar, hit a record low.”
That telecast, in case you needed reminding, also hit record amounts of Trump-bashing. It’s ironic since they’re now getting a boost from a show that embraces a more nuanced view of the president and his supporters.
On “The View,” Meghan McCain noted that when it comes to Roseanne’s ratings success, “you can’t underestimate the fact that she’s a Trump supporter in the show.”
“I actually did watch the show and I really loved it,” McCain said on Thursday’s edition of the show.
“I thought it was a pitch perfect take on what a lot of Trump supporters feel, which I’m always trying to explain on the show.
“She’s talking about jobs and the economy and how her family almost lost her house and President Trump was actually talking about jobs,” McCain added. ” That’s something you don’t see on television. Most of the time we see how Trump supporters have horns and they’re horrible and they’re ruining the country ”
She also noted where the ratings for the “Roseanne” revival were highest.
“It’s interesting to see that ‘Roseanne’ scored the highest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Ohio and Kansas City, Missouri,” McCain said. “That’s red America watching.”
