Crenshaw Blasts Universal Background Checks, Teaches America Truth Behind Legislation
The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to pass a gun control bill known as H.R. 8, which would establish “universal” background checks for firearm purchases.
The gun control bill passed by a vote of 240-190, Fox News reported, and included eight Republicans joining the Democrats to impose strict control over the sale and transfer of firearms.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, an outspoken supporter of the Second Amendment, explained in a Facebook video why he would be voting against the gun control measure.
“First, I want to help explain to everybody what universal background checks actually mean,” the Texas Republican said as he walked the halls of Congress.
“They don’t mean background checks at a gun dealer — that already happens, that’s already absolutely required. We all agree with that,” Crenshaw said.
“What they do mean is that you can no longer transfer a gun to a friend. You can no longer let your girlfriend or boyfriend use your weapon if you leave and they are at home trying to defend themselves, they would be made a felon if they used that weapon,” he continued.
“This is a pretty big overreach and also, we have to ask ourselves, will it do any good?”
Considering the fact that the bill, if it became law, would rely on self-enforcement to be effective, Crenshaw wondered what incentive criminals would have to comply with this mandate from Congress.
“The other issue is — and I’ve talked to Houston police about this quite a bit … when we see gun violence, where do these criminals get the gun?” Crenshaw said. “And their answer is, ‘Well, they stole it. They stole them or they bought them on the black market.'”
“(W)hat’s also the case is that all of the tragedies we’ve seen — whether it’s Parkland, or Sutherland Springs, or the Thousand Oaks tragedy or Sandy Hook — none of those would have been prevented by H.R. 8,” the congressman argued.
“So, we have to ask ourselves the question: If we’re going to infringe on people’s liberties, what are we doing it for?” he asked. “If it’s not going to do any good, if it’s not going to actually prevent tragedies, why are we infringing on people’s liberties? That’s what this bill is about, and it’s really important to research what universal background checks actually mean.”
Crenshaw was spot-on in his assessment of how ineffective this universal background check bill would be at stopping criminals from getting guns or preventing violent mass shootings. Instead, it would infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens to purchase, sell, loan or trade weapons with family, friends and loved ones.
Conservatives are tired of Democrats who seem set on undermining the Second Amendment by passing symbolic bills that will not be effective in stopping crime.
We need more leaders such as Crenshaw on Capitol Hill who will push back against the whims of unconstitutional leftists and help educate the public.
