Couple on Road Trip Stops at Gas Station, Returns to Dirty Stray Dog Lying Beside Car

We’ve all experienced that one road trip where things didn’t quite go as planned. But even in the midst of the switch-up, all turned out OK.

For one couple, they set out to embark on a 10-week cross-country road trip. But one stop at a gas station along the way left their trip in a turn of events they did not plan for.

Emily Trost and her boyfriend, Nick Mazzone, stopped at a gas station in Montana while en route and decided to go inside for a few minutes. However, they walked out to a sight they were not expecting.

A dirty, stray dog with twigs and thorns caught in her fur was lying next to their car. “Our initial thought was that she was the pet of someone else using the gas station,” said Trost.

The couple made their rounds asking people at the gas station if the 7-month-old pup belonged to them, but there were no takers.

“We also waited with her to see if somebody came out of the gas station store to claim her. Nobody did,” Trost recalled.

While they waited, a woman who feeds strays within the area saw the couple with the dog and urged them to take her, saying she deserved to be a given a good home.

So the couple placed the ragged pup in their car and drove away with possible intentions to find a rescue home. But that plan would quickly change.

“Within minutes of driving away with her in the car, we knew she was coming home with us,” said Trost.

The dog, named Montana after the state in which she was found, finally had a forever home.

“The morning after we got her was the best. She woke up in our tent and started crawling up to our heads, whimpering and giving us kisses,” Trost recalled.

Just one couple’s stop at the gas station had truly changed Montana’s life.

“We could tell she was truly surprised that we were still there with her and that no human had probably ever stayed with her for that long,” said Trost.

After a few sleeps on the road trip with her new parents, Montana showed her true energetic and happy self. The pup basked in the joys of her new life as they wrapped up the road trip.

“She loved the rest of the trip, always excited to hike and swim with us,” said Trost. The couple returned home with their newest fur-member of the family, ready to introduce Montana to her new canine siblings.

Sometimes when our plans take a different route than we thought, all turns out better than we could have imagined. Montana now enjoys the love of her family, her doggy toys, and a home she would have never had if it weren’t for the unexpected on one unforgettable road trip.
