Burglar with Ski Mask Chasing Age 9 Boy Upstairs, Boy's Pit Bull Starts Attacking Suspected Thief

It’s always a struggle to decide when it’s appropriate to leave children at home. And no matter how responsible the child, there are always forces outside their control that even an adult would have a difficult time combating.

Burglars are no respecters of persons. They have their own motives, and one young man learned all about that when he was home alone one day.

“I was upstairs when it happened,” 9-year-old Shane Smith said. His mother went to pick up one of Shane’s siblings when the alleged burglar entered their home.

“I thought it was my mom because I heard someone trying to open the door,” he told KOLN. “And I thought it was her trying to unlock the door with her keys.”

What he saw on the other side of the door was every kid’s worst nightmare. There was a man in a ski mask trying to break into the house.

Thankfully, Shane wasn’t alone. His dog, a pit bull named Baby Girl, was there to get his back.

“The dude started chasing me upstairs and I called my dog down and they started to fight,” Shane said. Without the dog, there’s no telling what would have happened.

“It was in a blink of an eye and I was really scared. Because, it was only me home and I didn’t know who it was and the only protection I had was my dogs,” the young boy said.

Has your pet ever protected you from danger?

“It seemed like he wanted me because when he saw me, he just slowly walked toward me and he didn’t look at anything else. He just kept his eyes on me,” he added.

While it doesn’t sound like the protective pup was hurt, the alleged intruder did tussle with her for a bit. “The dude pulled the blinds down on my dog’s head and then ran away and shut the door,” said Shane.

A neighbor called Shane’s mother to inform her of the robbery before she got back home. Police don’t have any leads on who the suspected burglar might have been.

All they know is what Shane told them and that he fled the scene in a silver car. If Shane was right, and the suspect was an abductor trying to get at Shane, the pit bull might have just saved his life.

Pit bulls get a bad reputation in the dog community, but there’s no other dog you’d rather have in your corner in a situation like this. Baby Girl attacked and turned a potentially devastating situation into a feel-good story.

Hopefully, this good girl got some extra treats for supper after her heroics. She certainly earned them.
