Breaking: Comey Charged for Reportedly Leaking National Security Secrets in 2016
The Department of Justice charged former FBI Director James Comey with alleged transmission of national defense information and conspiracy to transmit national defense information, according to court documents made public on Monday.
Comey, who launched the FBI probe into purported Russian election interference in 2016, is now facing his third federal case, according to a report from NBC News.
The outlet reported that Comey has not been indicted, and that his attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the charges.
The complaint alleged that Comey told an unnamed individual to “disclose national defense information to a reporter for a national news publication,” CNBC reported.

The direction was allegedly given “through one or more co-conspirators.”
Comey released a video on Substack reacting to the new charges.
“Well, they’re back again. It would almost be funny, if it weren’t such an appalling abuse of the Department of Justice, one that we cannot become numb to,” Comey said.
Comey, who led the FBI from 2013 to 2017, has faced two other federal criminal cases.
In April, he was indicted by a federal grand jury in North Carolina for allegedly threatening the life of President Donald Trump.
He had posted a photo on Instagram of seashells arranged in the shape of the numbers “86 47” — which prosecutors said is restaurant lingo for eliminating something, in this case the life of the commander-in-chief.
In September 2025, he was indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia on charges of making a false statement and obstruction, stemming from testimony he gave to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Sept. 30, 2020.
