Brave Teenager Saves 6-Year-Old Boy Being Attacked by Pit Bull

Share

On July 21, 6-year-old Mason was out in front of his home in Conroe, Texas, doing what many kids enjoy doing during the summer: playing with friends.

As he and his two companions whiled away the time, they had an encounter that left them all shaken and little Mason injured. Seemingly out of nowhere, a pit bull ran into the group of children, locking on to Mason.

Surveillance cameras from multiple homes show the attack. It almost looks like Mason attempts to greet the dog, but then it rushes him, knocking him over.

“My son was just lying on the ground,” Mason’s mom, Jillian Lindeman, told KXXV. “He’s six he kind of knows what to do but he’s never been put in a situation like that.”

The other two children ran to safety while the dog pinned Mason. Not knowing what else to do, the boy screamed — and that was his saving grace.

Nearby, 19-year-old Grant Brown heard the boy’s screams and ran over, not sure exactly what he was going to do, but knowing he needed to do something.

“I heard him first,” Brown told KHOU. “Once I noticed that the dog focused on me, I started to run, to get the dog away from the boy.”

Footage shows Brown racing down the street and clapping his hands as he got nearer. The dog, his attention diverted from his initial target, chased after Brown as the young man tore down the street, drawing the dangerous animal away from the 6-year-old.

According to Lindeman, Mason was quite a sight when she first saw him.

“His face was just all bloody, his neck was all bloody, it’s all down his arm,” she explained. The dog had apparently bitten the boy on the back of the head. It could have been much worse, though, if Brown hadn’t stepped in.

While Mason ran to safety, Brown continued his fight with the canine.

“I looked back and my shoes came off,” he said. “I tripped and fell the dog was on top of me before I knew it and I knew I had to keep his mouth away from me.”

“I was using my hands, you know, just push it away, but my hand ended up in his mouth and that’s when he bit me.”

The dog managed to clamp down on two of the teen’s fingers, but thankfully after some medical attention, Brown is doing well and should recover fine.

Mason also received four staples for the gash in his head, but is also doing well, considering all that happened.

Despite this harrowing experience, Mason still plans to spend the remaining weeks of summer outdoors. Lindeman knows that Brown is the reason she still has her son today.

“I just want to give the guy a hug,” Lindeman said of Brown, as she hadn’t had seen him since the attack. “There’s nothing I can do but just say thank you.

“I still think that if it weren’t for him, that … I don’t know if my son would be here.”

The dog is being held indefinitely by the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. The owners apologized, but they are not getting their dog back.

In typical hero fashion, Brown — who’s joining the Army later this year — insists that the day’s events were nothing special.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a hero, I just did the right thing,” he said. “I have two younger siblings, so I would hope that someone would do the same for them.”
