Baker Mayfield's professional career starts with controversy in 1st public appearance

Share

Right now, Baker Mayfield owns Cleveland.

The Heisman Trophy winner was, of course, the surprise No. 1 overall pick by the Browns in the NFL draft Thursday night.

Many experts believed USC’s Sam Darnold or Wyoming’s Josh Allen would be the choice, but Mayfield’s moxie and accuracy with the Oklahoma Sooners seemed to put him over the top.

Did we say accuracy?

Do you think Baker Mayfield will be a bust?

Well, hopefully for Browns fans Mayfield has a lot more accuracy with a football than he did with a baseball.

On Friday, he and fellow first-rounder Denzel Ward were at Progressive Field to throw out the first pitch before the Indians game.

Sure, it had been a whirlwind 24 hours for the former Sooner, but he did get to warm up.

And then came this:

With Cleveland being the home of the movie series “Major League,” you knew what was coming next.

Some Browns fans seem resigned to their fate before the games even start.

Maybe the good news is that Mayfield’s pitch was better than Ward’s — although Ward is a defensive back.

Plus, Mayfield did actually throw one pass that made everyone happy.

We suspect that if Baker throws like that instead of like his first pitch, everything will be alright.

Time will tell.
