Age 3 Daughter of Fallen Firefighter Sings Him 'Happy Birthday' in Video

Share

Firefighters, cops and soldiers all put their lives on the line every day. Many do so because they want to improve their communities and their country by offering themselves and their service.

It’s a sacrifice that not all are willing to make — but these bold men and women are not the only ones acquainted with sacrifice: Their families know it well, too.

Every day, husbands and wives kiss their loved ones goodbye, hoping that it will just be a normal day but never knowing what the job will hold. There’s always a possibility that their spouse might never return.

That possibility became a reality in February for one wife and mother when her Lawrenceburg firefighter husband, Jason Dickey, was killed in a fire.

The roof of a burning building fell on Dickey and four others, and even though he was pulled from the wreckage, it was too late for him. The other four were taken to the hospital, but the rest of the firefighters and Fire Chief Jay Moore were heartbroken over the loss of Dickey.

“He was like one of my own,” Moore said, according to the Tennessean. “These kids that I call kids, cause I’m the oldest one here, are my boys, the boys that I never had. And I’ve lost one of my boys.”

“I want to ask for everyone’s prayers,” he added. “We’re going to get through this by God’s grace and mercy.”

But they weren’t the only ones mourning. Dickey’s wife and his three kids were left to figure out what their lives would be now — and his wife was pregnant.

Though he is gone, the family is doing what they can to keep his memory alive. His birthday is Nov. 7, so they made sure to remember him on what would have been his 39th birthday.

One of those things involved Dickey’s 3-year-old daughter, Korbyn, singing a very special rendition of “Happy Birthday” while hugging a pillow with a photo of her dad on it.

The video has gone viral, breaking hearts all over again as the young girl sings to a father who left her life far too soon.

The family also went to his grave site to remember him, leaving flowers behind to honor him. They plan on having a cake, too.

“There are no words,” The Tennessee Highway Patrol Lawrenceburg Twitter wrote with their share of the video. “Embrace your loved ones and never forget the heroes who gave it all protecting us.”
