Trump: Nancy Pelosi Is GOP’s ‘Secret Weapon’

Share

Speaking Monday at a tax reform event in Ohio, President Donald Trump mocked House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, suggesting she is the GOP’s “secret weapon” for achieving electoral victories.

During his speech to employees of Sheffer Corporation in Blue Ash, Ohio, Trump touted the benefits of the tax reform legislation he signed into law late last year, and explained that some economists have estimated the average American family will save $4,000 a year.

However, Trump pointed out the hypocrisy in the fact that Pelosi has referred to the money middle-class Americans will save as “crumbs.”

“So Nancy Pelosi, again, said that’s ‘crumbs,'” Trump said. “Well, she’s a rich woman who lives in a big, beautiful house in California who wants to give all of your money away. And she talked about crumbs.”

“And I really think her statement about crumbs — because you’re getting thousands and thousands of dollars, and you’re getting it every year,” the president added.

He continued, asserting that the effects of Pelosi’s “crumbs” statement will be similar to the consequences of then-Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s remarks referring to Trump supporters as “deplorables.”

“So I think her statement ‘crumbs’ will be equivalent … When I first heard the word ‘deplorable,’ I thought it was a bad thing but I had no idea it was not going to be good for our opponent,” he said.

“It was not good because about two days after (Clinton) said it, I go to a rally. And everyone is wearing shirts, ‘I am a deplorable.’  ‘We’re all deplorables,'” Trump added. “It just went pretty wild. It was not a good day for her.”

Do you think Republicans will be successful in the 2018 midterm elections?

Trump said he doesn’t think it will be a “good day” for Pelosi either, suggesting that she is the GOP’s “secret weapon” for winning elections.

“And I think this is not a good day for Nancy Pelosi,” he said. “She’s our secret weapon. “

“No, she’s our secret — I just hope they don’t change her. There are a lot of people that want to run her out. She’s really out there. I’m supposed to make a deal with her?”

The president was referring to his negotiations with lawmakers as Republicans and Democrats look to reach a deal on immigration reform, specifically, the fate of “dreamers” — illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.

Trump has proposed a plan that would provide a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and other illegal immigrants, while also setting aside billions of dollars in funding for security measures along the U.S.-Mexico border, including  a wall.

Many Democrats, though, including Pelosi, have rejected this proposal, arguing that the president is holding DACA recipients hostage.

During his remarks Monday, Trump noted that congressional Democrat leaders have veered too far to the left.

“Nancy Pelosi — what she’s doing to this country. And she’s gone so far left, and Schumer has gone so far left,” he said. “Oh, I look forward to running against them.”

The president also expressed the belief that Republicans will do well in the upcoming 2018 midterm elections thanks to his administration’s “tremendous success,” particularly in regard to tax cuts.

“I think, because of what we’ve done, because of the tremendous success we’ve had, I have a feeling that we’re going to do incredibly well in ’18,” Trump said.
