Dem Mayor Wants Government To Act After Immigration Crisis Engulfs His Small Border Town

Share

It’s one thing to talk about the border crisis from comfy chairs and plush offices in Washington, D.C., but it’s another thing entirely to come down to the border and witness it firsthand, then make decisions based on what’s actually happening on the ground.

The latter is what one border-town mayor wants.

Democrat Mayor Bruno Lozano of Del Rio, Texas spoke earlier this month with staffers for Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Will Hurd — both Republicans — and informed them of his struggles in dealing with illegal immigration at the local level.

According to Fox News, the mayor invited members of Congress down to his part of the world to witness the issues he faces with their own eyes.

“They need to see firsthand what’s going on,” Lozano said.

“They need to understand the frustrations that the commissioners, or that the city council, the school board, the hospital officials are managing [and] having to deal with.”

The mayor explained that illegal immigration is crushing his town and taking away resources from other needed projects.

“We’re frustrated. We’re extremely frustrated,” he said. “Our priorities on the city council are our streets, are our parks, are the economy, are the drive of the community and the places of worship and the places to have leisure activities. It is not the priority to solve immigration.”

He wants Washington’s help, but says many politicians just aren’t listening.

Do you think congressional Democrats care about the fate of border towns like Del Rio, Texas?

Of course, that’s mostly thanks to stalling Democrats.

“It is not our purview; it is not our jurisdiction. It is your job to ensure that you convey the frustration that I share with you all to ensure that our representatives at the federal level are hearing it,” he told staffers for the two members of Congress.

“It’s falling on deaf ears, and we are tired of it,” Lozano said. “We are sick and tired of the deaf ears.”

After learning of the mayor’s comments, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted about the issue, demanding that Congress “step up & do it’s job.”

It’s a demand that that most Americans could likely get behind.

Abbott noted that for the time being, “Texas is adding Dept. of Public Safety Troopers & National Guard to border security.”

Earlier this month, Customs and Border Protection reported that in recent days, the U.S. Border Patrol saw a “dramatic rise” in detained African migrants.

Over 500 of the migrants were arrested by Border Patrol agents operating in Del Rio, the same city Lozano governs.

Congressional Democrats — who are mostly to blame for the growing border crisis — need to take Lozano’s words to heart, stop stonewalling action at the border and start working with the Trump administration to pass comprehensive border reform.

If not, towns like Del Rio will run rampant with illegal immigrants, and our country will slowly erode from the border up.
