Rick Scott Steps In, Humiliates AOC After Smug 'Critical Thinking' Tweet
In the words of the great Charlie Brown, “Don’t you know sarcasm when you hear it?”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez apparently doesn’t. In fact, she managed to make a fool of herself in an online debate with Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott over a gun control plan proposed by 2020 Democrat presidential candidate Cory Booker.
In case you missed the painfully earnest New Jersey senator’s move against the Second Amendment, Booker announced what he called the “most sweeping gun violence prevention plan ever put forth by a presidential candidate” on Monday, including requiring every gun owner to obtain a federal license.
“Booker argued that just as a driver’s license demonstrates a person’s eligibility and proficiency to drive a car, ‘a gun license demonstrates that a person is eligible and can meet certain safety and training standards necessary to own a gun,'” Fox News reported.
“According to Booker’s plan, current and first-time firearms buyers would seek a license at a designated office, similar to obtaining a passport. The applications would then be verified by the FBI. Current gun owners would have a transition period to obtain a federal license.”
There was a lot more rubbish to this whole spectacle, including the pro forma shot at the phrase “thoughts and prayers,” but the less time spent upon this pseudo-event the better.
The point is that it occasioned a few tweets from Sen. Scott with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
“BREAKING: the latest terrible idea to come out of the Democrats’ 2020 primary is a federal gun registry,” Scott tweeted. “If you want to buy a gun, @CoryBooker wants you to register with the federal government. This would be scary if Booker had any chance of becoming President.”

“What’s next? Will we have to register sharp knives? Maybe @AOC will make us register every time we buy meat as part of her #GreenNewDeal,” Scott added in a second tweet.
“The Democrats are officially the @BernieSanders Party. They want America to be less prosperous and less free.”

Now, except for that last part, this is chucklesome stuff, certainly nothing anyone would take seriously, right?
Eh, I assume you can guess where this train is going:
That a sitting US Senator can say something lacking so much critical thinking + honesty is embarrassing to the institution.
If you were a female candidate, maybe you’d be called “unlikeable,” “crazy,” or “uninformed.”
But since you’re not, this inadequacy is accepted as normal. https://t.co/KLkaYxfT6K

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, please pick up the nearest white courtesy telephone. Please stay away from Twitter until you do, as well.
Scott, of course, wasted no time hitting back.
“That a sitting Congresswoman doesn’t understand sarcasm would be embarrassing to the institution if you hadn’t embarrassed yours to the point of irrelevance already,” Sen. Scott shot back. “America rejects socialism and will continue to.”

As of Tuesday morning, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has yet to respond. Holding one’s breath for a rejoinder will probably result in hypoxia.
For all her omnipresence in the media, Ocasio-Cortez has never come off as the sharpest knife in the drawer. In only a few short months in the public eye, She’s had too many high-profile flubs.
This time, I’m not quite sure what induces the most inadvertent laughter from Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet: The fact that she decided to make it at all, given the obvious sarcasm, or the fact that it included a lot of righteous indignation about how what Scott had said was Not Funny.
Apparently, there’s sexism or racism or, I don’t know, something retrograde at play here. Pick your own offense.
It’s all good entertainment, whatever the case. Keep tweeting your way into irrelevance, Alexandria. With every small embarrassment like this, it becomes clear that your career is likely never to escape the orbit of your sinecure in the outer boroughs.
And sure, the faux pas can’t all be farting cows, but they’re all good for at least a laugh or two if you think about them critically.
