Trump's First Nat. Monument Honors Black Troops. Liberals Immediately Attack
There may be nothing more entertaining than watching the left spin themselves up into a lather because they can’t decide which of their pet platform issues to throw under the bus in order to smear the president.
President Donald Trump, the man who can do no good in the eyes of the left, just issued an executive order to designate a national monument, his first of this kind, and liberals are twisted in knots trying to find something wrong with it.
This particular national monument is Camp Nelson in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
The reason this monument is so special is because it recognizes the role this location played during the Civil War as “one of the largest recruitment and training depots for United States Colored Troops,” reported Stars and Stripes.
While Kentucky was the last state in the Union to let African-American men enlist in the army, Camp Nelson sent 23,000 African-American Union soldiers to fight in the Civil War. The camp housed nearly 180,000 at that time.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who last year recommended that Trump designate the site as a national monument, celebrated the announcement Saturday in an event in Kentucky attended by dozens of activists and Rep. Garland ‘Andy’ Barr, R-Ky., who authored legislation to recognize it,” according to Stars and Stripes.

Remembering the rich history, ABC reported: “The Camp Nelson National Cemetery, where many wounded soldiers are buried, is adjacent to what is now the Camp Nelson National Monument. The camp influenced Congress to free the wives and children of African-American men who fought in the Union Army after 102 women and children died during a forced expulsion from the camp in the winter of 1864. The camp and refugee camps were closed in 1866 but about 250 stayed in the area and established the community now known as Hall, Kentucky.”
And unity. Aren’t liberals always calling for unity? This is a great message and symbol of unity.
“I am proud to advocate for Camp Nelson, a site which has the ability to unite the American people,” reported Stars and Stripes.
Who could find fault with such much deserved recognition? Liberals, that’s who.
The Center for American Progress’ director of public lands, Kate Kelly thinks the president’s executive action is a political ploy to attack Barr’s opponent, Democrat Amy McGrath, prior to election. She’s challenging Barr in what is considered to be a tight, nearly tied race according to Newsweek.
Kate Kelly, director of public lands for the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, said that the camp “deserves to be protected.” However, she questioned the timing of the proclamation, given that Barr is locked in a tight re-election race with Democrat Amy McGrath.
“But we can’t ignore the deep irony and injustice in President Trump using the same authority to protect one chapter of America’s story, while illegally stripping protections for another national monument that honors Native American history and culture. Given this announcement comes mere days before a tight election in Kentucky, we must also question whether the historic site is being used as a political pawn,” reported Stars and Stripes.
Kelly was referring to Utah’s Bears Ears National Monument. In December of 2017 the president shrank the borders of the national monument by 85 percent, sending left wing groups like The Sierra Club and environmentalists into a tizzy.
Recognizing the contribution African-Americans made during the Civil War and freeing their families in a show of gratitude for that effort would have been roundly applauded if former President Barack Obama had done what President Trump did on Saturday.
So let’s tally up the issues. We have freed slaves, honoring African-Americans, preserving a national monument and green space, as well as unifying a nation. Anything I’m forgetting or anything actually wrong with these events? No, I didn’t think so.
You can’t please all of the people all of the time and you can never please a liberal any of the time.
