Graham Calls for Full-Scale Investigation into Feinstein
South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham became the latest GOP voice to slam California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein over the contentious sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
This follows Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton also calling for an investigation into Feinstein’s actions.
While Cotton certainly wields some political influence, Graham’s actions carry a little more bite with that bark.
If Republicans are able to retain control of the Senate following next month’s midterms, Graham is one of the candidates to chair the Judiciary Committee, according to The Daily Caller.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos, Graham made his intentions perfectly clear.
“The FBI will do a supplemental background investigation, then I’m going to call for an investigation of what happened in this committee,” Graham said.
Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, had reportedly wanted confidentiality when she initially told Feinstein about the alleged assault.
Considering the way in which Ford has been thrust into the national spotlight, she obviously didn’t get her wish.
That’s truly the crux of Graham and Cotton’s call to investigate Feinstein. Both senators are correct in their approach.
As a sexual assault victim, Ford should be heard. Regardless of what you think her motives may be, she deserves a chance to present her case. While her stark lack of evidence to back up her claims is certainly eyebrow-raising, hearing her out is how due process plays out.
By that same token, Kavanaugh should not be maligned until the case is closed. A fundamental tenet of American law is to withhold presumptions of innocence and guilt until due process plays out.
What is very much fair game to excoriate, however, has been the Democrats’ handling of the entire scandal.
If Ford truly wanted confidentiality, the Democratic leadership has failed her spectacularly.
I can’t definitively say that Democrats weaponized an alleged sexual assault victim’s trauma for political gain. But if that is, in fact, what has happened, it fully deserves to be vetted and investigated.
“Who betrayed Dr. Ford’s trust? Who in Feinstein’s office recommended Katz as a lawyer? Why did Ms. Ford not know that the committee was willing to go to California?” Graham asked on “This Week.”
Graham’s last question is certainly worth looking into. If Ford’s lawyers, provided by Democrats, intentionally misled or withheld information regarding the committee’s willingness to meet with her in California simply as a way to help Democrats delay the confirmation process, that is reprehensible and a gross misuse of power.
“We’re going to do a wholesale, full-scale investigation of what I think was a despicable process to deter it from happening again,” Graham noted.
If this was an intentional play, Democrats should be ashamed for ever letting it happen at all.
