Hillary Called Us Deplorables. Now Biden's Calling Us the 'Dregs'

Share

He’s been floated as a possible 2020 presidential candidate and his recent speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner could be part of him ramping up that effort. In it, former vice-president Joe Biden took a page from former first lady Hillary Clinton’s playbook and attacked President Donald Trump—and his supporters.

He told the audience in regards to the LGBTQ community, “These forces of intolerance remain determined to undermine and roll back the progress you all have made. This time, they, not you, have an ally in the White House.”

He continued, “They’re a small percentage of the American people, virulent people, some of them the dregs of society. And instead of using the full might of the executive branch to secure justice, dignity, safety for all, the president uses the White House as a literal, a literal, bully pulpit.”

Biden’s claim that Trump and his “dregs of society” supporters are against the LGBTQ community stands in stark contrast to the speech Trump gave at the RNC Convention in 2016, and the audience’s reaction to it. A video clip from the event shows something very different from what Biden asserts:

He said, “Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time the terrorist’s target: LGBTQ community.”

“No good. And we’re gonna stop it.” At this, the crowd went wild, many rising to their feet, erupting into cheering, applause and chanting.

He continued, “As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful, foreign ideology. Believe me.”

Are President Trump's supporters the "dregs of society?"

Again the crowd went wild, those who were not already standing now did so, and the clapping, cheering and chanting picked up again. Trump was quick to comment on their reaction.

“And I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you.” The crowd cheered even more loudly after that.

But facts don’t seem to matter much when it comes to spewing hateful rhetoric in order to smear one’s opponent. Or their supporters, which seems to be a new, weird low — attacking voters when you are trying to get votes in an election.

It worked so well for Hillary Clinton, with her “deplorables” commentary. Oh, wait. She lost.

Naturally Trump had something to say about that. He trolled Clinton over it, and noted that the “deplorables” would never be ignored again. “They’re all going to be coming after you for every election from now on in this country.”

Who are these “dregs of society” and “deplorables” Biden and Clinton like to smear? Perhaps they are the coal miners who supported Trump in hopes they’d get work again. They did, according to Townhall.

Maybe Biden’s “dregs” are people like anti-MS-13 activist, Evelyn Rodriquez. She was a guest at President Trump’s first official State of the Union address. She was also the mom who was hit and killed by an SUV recently while setting up a memorial for her daughter, who was killed by MS-13.

And perhaps some of those “dregs” are now calling Biden out for the hateful moniker on social media. A few examples:

What we do know is that they are people Biden does not appear to believe support him or the Democrats. Does that difference of opinion make them “dregs of society?”

Trump’s supporters, i.e. the people not likely to be supporting Biden, tend to be working class people. They are the heart and soul of America. They are the folks who keep things running and pay taxes.

Because of that, they tend to want low taxes and small government. Both of these things are counter to what the Democrats run on. So, apparently to them that makes such people “deplorables” and the very “dregs of society.”
