Peak Unhinged: House Dem. Appears to Call for Military Coup Against Trump
Even 18 months into President Donald Trump’s administration, Democrats can still be shocking.
But U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, a Trump-hating liberal from Tennessee, lowered the bar for his party even further this week after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. Cohen published a Twitter post that sounded an awful lot like a call for the United States military to stage a coup against its own president.
“Where are our military folks?” Cohen wrote. “The Commander in Chief is in the hands of the enemy!”

Let’s just say the response wasn’t what the honorable gentleman from Memphis might have been expecting. In fact, the vast majority of Twitter users who answered Cohen accused him of being either insane or treasonous.
Considering how unhinged the Democrat Party has been since Trump defeated the “inevitable” Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, the tweet was probably a mixture of both. But even with virtually all Democrats approaching the peak of Trump derangement these days, Cohen is a little higher on the scale than most.
The man is so deep into the #Resistance that he actually introduced articles of impeachment against Trump in the House or Representatives in November. They went nowhere, of course.
Just last week, he used his position on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to tell anti-Trump FBI agent Peter Strzok, a man whose loyalties to the Constitution are at the least questionable, that Strzok deserved a Purple Heart for handling questions from Congress during a committee hearing last week.
Cohen eventually told CNN he regretted his language, which many veterans and others felt was disrespectful of a military award meant for those who have been wounded in the defense of their country. But the damage was done.
And the Twitter responses to Cohen’s seeming call for a coup didn’t let him forget it.
Are you kidding me? So as a United States Congressman, you’re calling for a Military Coup? Right after your suggestion that a disgraced FBI Agent deserves a Purple Heart? Sir you need to stand down!

To be fair, Cohen posted another tweet later saying he never meant to call for a coup and, in typical Democrat fashion, mocking people who took him at his words.
But the reality is that Cohen’s words are emblematic of the Democrat Party heading into the pivotal 2018 midterms, halfway through Trump’s first tenure as president.
A member of a party with a history of loathing the military, Cohen has never worn the uniform himself but has no problem making light of an award given to those who have been wounded fighting for their country.
He’s a member of the party that falsely warned that Trump supporters might not accept the results of the 2016 election, then has spent the past 18 months trying to undo those results – with the considerable assistance of the nation’s disgracefully biased “news” organizations.
And now he’s issued a veiled call for a military coup, then backed off and mocked the idea he could have even been serious.
But it doesn’t matter whether he was speaking seriously. What matters is how well he symbolizes the ignorance and arrogance of the Democrat Party in 2018.
Even 18 months into the Trump administration, it’s still shocking.
