Hypocrisy: Canadian Officials Travel to US To Warn Immigrants Not To Head North
Nine days after Donald Trump was inaugurated president — as the first travel bans began to go into place — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted out words that would end up haunting his immigration policies like a ghost that sticks around a decrepit mansion.
It only took a few words, too: “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada.”
Trudeau’s tweet was obviously intended to paint Trump’s travel bans as “Muslim bans” and position Canada as America’s caring alternative.
And then things began to go seriously awry for him.
To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada

“For someone to successfully seek asylum it’s not about economic migration,” Trudeau told reporters in August of 2017, mere months later, as the London Guardian reported that his country was “forced to backtrack on open invitation to refugees.”
“It’s about vulnerability, exposure to torture or death, or being stateless people. If they are seeking asylum we’ll evaluate them on the basis of what it is to be a refugee or asylum seeker.”
Canada’s immigration laws, in fact, are actually stricter than the United States’ — something Trudeau wasn’t really keen on sharing with the media when he made an offer he was sure wouldn’t be taken seriously. Except it was, with one Conservative Party critic calling it a “shambles.”
So now, the country that’s been calling the Trump administration out on its immigration policies is telling people they can’t just show up at their border and expect to enter illegally or anything.
“As President Trump travels north to Canada to attend the G7 summit, Canadian officials have been heading south to try to stem a wave of undocumented immigrants headed their way,” USA Today reported Friday.
“In what has become an increasingly regular mission, Canadian representatives visited the U.S. this week to warn immigrants fearful over President Trump’s immigration crackdown that they can’t simply rush north of the border to find safe haven.”
Where’s Samantha Bee using sexist slurs on Trudeau’s children? I mean, that’s what she does in cases like this, right?
Yes, apparently the country that American liberals love to love apparently doesn’t view illegal immigration quite as fondly as they do.
“In August, Royal Canadian Mounted Police caught more than 5,500 people trying to illegally cross from the U.S. Those were mostly Haitian immigrants who will soon lose Temporary Protected Status as part of the Trump administration’s phase-out of the TPS program that has protected more than 300,000 people from countries struck by war and natural disasters,” USA Today noted.
“Only about 8% of their asylum application have been approved, however, meaning the vast majority have been turned down and are being deported straight back to their home countries.”
If this were the Trump administration, the media would be pitching a fit. There would be dirges about penurious illegal immigrants who just wanted the American dream but got deported because they made the crime of dreaming (oh, and coming into this country illegally, oh, and usually committing some sort of crime, too, but that’s buried in the ninth or 10th paragraph until the sympathy boulder has rolled far enough down the hill to gather momentum).
But Canada? Where’s the outrage? There’s absolutely nothing — proof yet again that all you have to do to get away with things liberals detest is to simply call yourself a liberal.
