Boycott: Samantha Bee Backtracks On Ivanka Apology, Accepts Award for 'Social Change'

Share

In a speech accepting an award for “social change,” comedian Samantha Bee seemed to backtrack from her apology to Ivanka Trump, implying that the really offensive part of what she said on her program Wednesday was her father’s immigration policies.

According to Indiewire, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” was being honored by the Television Academy “for its coverage of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements, noting that for Women’s History Month, the show took on the lack of information about women’s health in the medical community.”

And what better way to honor women than to give a speech in which you totally minimize your apology to the first daughter for calling her a “feckless c—” and implying she should “put on something tight” so her father would listen to her?

“You know, the thing is our show is steeped in passion,” Bee said at the Hollywood event Thursday night. “Every week I strive to show the world as I see it, unfiltered. Sometimes I should probably have a filter. I accept that. I take it seriously when I get it right and I do take responsibility when I get it wrong.”

Except when she doesn’t.

“Stories about 1,500 missing unaccompanied migrant children flooded the news cycle over the weekend,” Bee continued. “So last night we aired a segment on the atrocious treatment of migrant children by this administration and past administrations. Sometimes even the ones who look best in swim trunks do bad jobs with things. Our piece attracted controversy of the worst kind.”

“We spent the day wrestling with the repercussions of one bad word, when we all should have spent the day incensed that as a nation we are wrenching children from their parents and treating people legally seeking asylum as criminals,” she added. “If we are OK with that then really, who are we?”

Perhaps we are people who don’t believe, as you appear to, that no vulgarity is too nauseating for persons whom you disagree with?

Are you surprised Samantha Bee was not fired for her remark about Ivanka Trump?
Perhaps we are people who believe using horrifyingly sexist slurs against women on the other side of the political spectrum probably ought to disqualify you from an award for positive social change for women?

Perhaps we are people who would take responsibility for those remarks instead of saying that the real responsibility lies in the policies that you disagree with?

I don’t know, you’re going to have to help me out here, because I’m not the one who said all of that hours after I had to make this apology:

… which is an apology you had to make because there was no practical way your employers at TBS could have kept you in your current role had you not made it.

Of course, Bee’s real feelings on the matter were probably closer to the ones revealed at the Television Academy Honors (and they made sure that she could share those feelings more freely by disinviting the press at the last minute, by the way). The blame is with the illegal immigration straw-man she and those on the left have so vigorously pursued no matter how contrafactual what they say may be.

That excuse may fly before a simpatico audience in Hollywood. You probably won’t see it work so well elsewhere, which is part of why one guesses the press was barred from the event.

Once the rest of America — especially Bee’s sponsors — get a load of this, however, you can bet that another round of damage control is going to begin.
