Goodell Ensures the End of the NFL, "We're Just Getting Started"

Share

The 2017-2018 season has been a disastrous one for Roger Goodell and the NFL. The NFL has given way to anthem protesters, and, in return, ratings have plummeted.

Now, Goodell is doubling down on his decisions, which all but ensures the slow death of the NFL.

Bangor Daily News reported that Goodell told reporters via a conference call that he is going to increase his efforts to bring attention to “social justice” programs and campaigns.

Because that worked so well for you this past year?

“This is just the beginning. We’re just getting started with this effort,” he told reporters on the call. In other words, get ready to see more demonstrations and campaigns just like the anthem protests.

The committee to handle these initiatives met last month and included “owners Arthur Blank of the Atlanta Falcons, Stephen Ross of the Miami Dolphins, Jimmy Haslam of the Cleveland Browns, Shahid Khan of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Michael Bidwill of the Arizona Cardinals.”

Payers from the NFL were also on the committee, including “the Washington Redskins’ Josh Norman, the New York Jets’ Kelvin Beachum and Josh McCown and two retired players, Anquan Boldin and Aeneas Williams.”

“A number of owners who have been in the league even longer than me said they have never seen owners and players work together so closely on an issue,” said Arthur Blank of the Atlanta Falcons.

Here’s the problem, though. People who tune in to watch football actually want to watch football. I know it’s a stretch to actually ask the NFL to play football games, but come on.

Do you think Goodell went too far with this statement?

One of the new initiatives being rolled out is called, “Let’s Listen Together.” According to a statement put out by the NFL, this campaign, “includes a multilayered rollout including digital content and brand spots highlighting the player-led work on social and racial equality. The platform will also include social media support, as well as individual letters from players and owners sharing their stories and personal reasons for making social justice a priority.”

This move by Goodell doesn’t make any sense.

If the anthem protests and similar campaigns by SJWs led to the decline of ratings, then why is he doubling down on this type of behavior? He’s digging his own grave, so to speak, by signing off on these initiatives.

That’s not to say that players and owners shouldn’t ever speak out against social injustices. In fact, if there’s a legitimate social injustice, we should all speak out.

But to use the national anthem as the vehicle to do it is absolutely uncalled for. That’s exactly why people stopped watching.

“We’re dedicated to making a difference in our communities,” said Anquan Boldin, a retired player from the Baltimore Ravens, according to the Bangor Daily News.

That’s great, Anquan, and we wish you the best in your endeavors. But leave our national anthem and flag out of it.

Do things need to change? Sure. But you can bring about change without disrespecting the anthem, the flag, or the men and women who bled and died to make sure your freedom of speech is upheld.
