27-Year-Old Father of 3 Reportedly Loses 100+ Pounds After Doctors Give Him Year to Live

One dad from DeSoto, Texas, is transforming the way his family — and his community — looks at food by serving up allergy-friendly and plant-based choices at his new restaurant.
Peace, Love, & Eatz is owned by 27-year-old James McGee. The married father of 3 daughters has made it his mission to help others be healthy, and his inspiration stems from the fact that he wasn’t always so healthy himself.
In the past, McGee faced some serious health issues. He was overweight, heavily medicated (taking 22 different medications a day!) and suffered from liver and kidney problems.
At one point, his doctor told him he likely had only a year left.
You’d never know such was the case to look at him now that he’s reportedly lost 100 pounds. McGee is a chef and runs his own restaurant at the Grow DeSoto Market Place.
McGee’s health was declining while one of his daughters — Captain, now 4 — suffered from skin problems and food allergies. He knew he had to make a change for his family.
“We went home and got rid of everything,” he recalled in an interview with Dallas News. “We didn’t want her doing it by herself.”
McGee saw what a difference a change in his diet could make and wanted to help others in the same way. He opened Peace, Love, & Eatz where he offers smoothies and other vegan and nutritious foods.
McGee does his best to keep those with allergies in mind when creating new recipes.
“We have an alternative for everything,” he told Dallas News.
“Instead of cashew sauce, I can make a hemp sauce, or a nut-free hemp granola. I just found out that some people are allergic to avocados, so I’m trying to figure out what to replace that with.”
It really comes down to community and teaching others in his area that a healthy, plant-based lifestyle is doable. McGee does his best to answer questions any customers might have about this alternative way of eating.
“We know what’s it’s like to go somewhere and people not want to serve you because of your allergies or dietary restrictions,” Peace, Love, & Eatz shared on Facebook. “For that reason, we are committed to doing everything in our power to meet whatever restrictions you have. We’ve been there before and we would never want to make someone feel that way, so please don’t hesitate to let us know your needs. We want to take care of you and the rest of our community.”
McGee shared with Dallas News that he wants to impact the younger generations as well. He hopes to partner with his local alternative education program to provide young people with work in positive environments that will make a difference in their futures.
