Police Officers Show Up To Surprise Young Cancer Survivor Whose Bike Was Stolen Off His Porch
It is always heartbreaking when we hear stories of theft. What’s even more heartbreaking, however, is when we learn something was stolen from a child.
Daylin Campbell of Lake Wales, Florida, is 13, but the young man has already faced a great deal of hardship.
He’s battled leukemia, and more recently he had his bike stolen right off his front porch. The bike was a Christmas gift and Daylin’s mom says it has “sentimental value.”
Sadly, according to ABC Action News, the 13-year-old hasn’t had much of an opportunity to ride his bike because of his illness.
When a group of police officers, along with the Polk County Sheriff himself, heard of the theft and showed up at the teen’s door, he might have thought they were there to make a report or bring news on the stolen bike.
While they expressed they hoped to find the thief, what they had for Daylin was even better. “Look what we got,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a video posted on Facebook. “Is that pretty awesome?”
What he had was pretty awesome indeed. Out on the walkway in front of Daylin’s home was a replacement bike complete with a safety helmet.
“This week we kindly received a donated bike and surprised Daylin with it to cheer him up,” Polk County Sheriff’s Office wrote in the video’s caption.
“Want to know the even better news?” the caption went on. “Daylin is now in remission and we hope this bike will help him enjoy being a kid again.”
Daylin expressed his gratitude to the officers and posed for a photo. His mom, Canice Jordan, shared her love for these kind men on Facebook.
“I never expected this,” she wrote. “Thank you to Sheriff Grady Judd for taking the time out of your busy day to hand deliver my son a brand new bicycle.”
The mom went on to say that she knew the Sheriff’s Department didn’t have to go above and beyond like this, but that she’ll always be grateful they took that extra step to make Daylin’s day.
We love stories like this one — kindness for kindness’ sake. We hope Daylin enjoys his new bike and we are glad to hear he’s recovering so he can ride it one day soon.
