Age 7 Girl Throws Message in a Bottle into Sea. Two Decades Later, Runner Finds It
Time capsules are a fun way to preserve the past. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are buried in the ground, others are hidden in basements or attics.
Then there are those that are tossed out to sea. While a message in a bottle may not seem like the best idea for preserving a piece of one’s past, it worked out for one woman who visited Wales at the age of 7.
Twenty-five-year-old Emily Edwards was just a little girl when she wrote her name and address on a note, rolled it up, and stuffed it inside a plastic Sprite bottle.
That was in 2001, and 18 years would pass before the now 25-year-old would see this glimpse into her past again.
“It was crazy,” Edwards told BBC. “I never would have expected it to come back.” But it did come back, turning up 60 miles away from where she tossed it.
If not for Sam Hammond, who happened to be running in Nefyn where the capsule surfaced, the bottle and message might not have made it into the right hands.
A Facebook post on TelfordLive featured the crinkled paper with running, faded blue ink. “Sue Cookson, who lives in North Wales says her son has just found this message in a bottle,” the announcement reads.
“Sadly water has got in but you can see the date of 28/12/01 and a name of Emily,” the post continues. “The address is Telford with a postcode of TF1 6JZ. We would love Emily to know her bottle has been found 18 years later!!”
Thankfully, Edwards saw the post just hours later and recognized her handwriting. “I saw it and I thought, I still have the same handwriting,'” the mom of one shared with BBC.
Now she hopes to share this amazing story with her daughter one day. “Can’t get my head around how it hasn’t been picked up as litter or anything like that,” she told Inside Edition.
“It’s a brilliant story to tell my little girl when she’s older and we can try doing the same when she understands a bit more and hopefully maybe hers will come back one day.”
We love this! What’s more, the fact that she got the idea from watching the 1999 film “Message in a Bottle” staring Robin Wright and Kevin Costner somehow makes it even sweeter.
We’re glad this young mom has a special story to pass on to her daughter. Maybe that little girl will one day write a message in a bottle of her own. She certainly has good reason to believe it will come back to her one day.
