Dying Puppy Sets Off To Complete 'Bucket List' Before Last Day on Earth
Even if we’ve never explicitly conceptualized it, I suspect that most of us have bucket lists — things we want to do during our time on Earth.
Perhaps you want to visit Asia or eat the world’s hottest pepper. I know one guy whose bucket list contained swimming with the famous Bahamian swimming pigs in the Exuma Cays.
The point is that you’ve probably thought a lot about what you want to do and made the decision for yourself. But what do you do when you have to cram a lifetime of experience into a short period for someone who doesn’t realize death is approaching?
That’s exactly the situation Rescued Hearts Northwest finds itself in. According to KOMO, the organization aids pets in the Pacific Northwest.
Some of that care takes the form of educational outreach, teaching people the importance of spaying and neutering their animals. It also means boarding approximately 200 pets annually.
Rescued Hearts Northwest has also provided pricey medical care for seriously ill pooches. Sadly, they recently discovered that there’s nothing they can do for an 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy named Logan.
The puppy came to the attention of the organization when another rescue agency offered him up for free on Facebook, saying that he had medical issues they couldn’t address. Rescued Hearts Northwest initially believed that he simply had a bad heart murmur.
However, an examination by a veterinarian turned up something far worse. Logan had pulmonic valve dysplasia, KOMO reported.
The condition prevents the main valve of his heart from completely closing, leading to poor oxygenation. Additionally, the little dog’s heart already showed the signs of significant scarring.
The vet couldn’t say if Logan would live for one month or twelve. One thing was certain, though: His condition was fatal.
Rather than feel down in the mouth, the good folks at Rescued Hearts Northwest decided to try a different approach. They would craft a puppy bucket list for him, giving him great experiences he never even knew he wanted.
“His wonderful foster family has decided to be his final refuge home and give him the best life a puppy could ask for during his time with us, but we would love your help,” the organization wrote on Facebook. “We want Logan to be able to experience anything and everything a puppy would ever want to experience, so we are hoping all of you will help us create the most amazing bucket list we can for Logan.
“Share your ideas with us and we will create ‘Logan’s Bucket List’ and share his adventures here with you. Let’s hear your ideas for Logan!”
The organization’s supporters have come up with many ideas. Some of the suggestions include visiting the beach, visiting a nursing home, extended snuggle time, having a puppy play date and taking a nap with his foster family.
As the ideas have flowed in, Rescue Hearts Northwest has followed up with updates. They’ve included pictures of Logan frolicking in the sand and having his paw held at a nursing home.
The impending death of a dog is always a sad thing, but Logan’s human friends are giving him a royal send-off. What activities do you think should be on the puppy’s list?
