Pineapple on 'Masked Singer' Reveals Illness, Sings 'I Will Survive' - It's Tommy Chong
With each new television season, it seems there are the oldies — the shows that have earned our love and trust over a number of seasons.
And then there are the newbies. Try as they might, they can’t quite compete with our prime-time faves. We promise to give them a chance only to find they’re discontinued after a season of two.
As far as singing competitions go, we’ve seen our fair share. Some make it. Some… well, don’t. From “The Voice” to “America’s Got Talent,” there is no shortage of singing hopefuls longing to catch their big breaks.
The newest addition to 2019’s musical show scene is Fox’s “The Masked Singer” — a show that thus far has us pleasantly surprised. Unlike other singing competitions, this one’s got a twist that’s too crazy not to watch at least once.
With some of the most ridiculous and extravagant costumes and masks we’ve ever seen, “The Masked Singer” features song battles between some of our favorite celebrities.
The celebrities’ speaking voices are kept a mystery as they delve out many clues to help the celebrity judges guess their identities.
When they break into song, their real voices are used. Underneath the mask could be our favorite country music star or even our favorite football player.
The show’s debut episode revealed the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown as “The Hippo,” while episode two brought with it perhaps the most unusual character we’ve seen yet: “The Pineapple.”
With a broad grin on his masked face, this famous fruit gave a number of specific clues for the judges to mull over.
“Although I look happy now, I’ve gone through some dark times,” Pineapple said in the episode.
“After beating a life-threatening disease, this OG has decided to take things as they come. And never wipe the smile off my face.”
Take a look at his laid back performance of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” What he lacks in showmanship he certainly makes up for with his distinctively suave voice.
If you guessed lifetime comedic legend Tommy Chong while watching the show, you were right on target along with judge Jenny McCarthy.
Watch as Chong is revealed. His smile is worth a thousand words. The best part is when he says, “Anything to get on stage.”
One half of the famous duo, “Cheech & Chong,” Tommy certainly has seen those dark times he mentioned. The 80-year-old battled cancer, ABC News reported, which makes his song choice as “The Pineapple” that much more meaningful.
Even so, he kept his good attitude and his faith. “I know that life doesn’t end just because the body gets put in the ground,” he told ABC News.
“The soul is forever, is eternal,” he said. “So, I know that, and that’s the comforting thing.” His smile is inspiring and his singing isn’t too bad either.
