Sweet Dog Sleeps with Soldier Mom's Shirt Every Night While She's Away

Military family stories are some of the best and most touching ones around. Now Geico has partnered with The Dodo to shine the spotlight on “Welcome Home” stories from around the world.

Ashlyn and Blake served in the army together. According to Military Spouse, their fondness for each other grew during a deployment in Afghanistan.

“We got married on a Thursday,” Ashlyn told Military Spouse. “Blake called me and said why don’t we get married today?”

That was in 2012 and the pair is as happy as ever, with one addition to their tribe — Bacon. Probably the sweetest dog on the planet, Bacon misses Ashlyn terribly when she’s away.

The trio is stationed in Germany. Blake no longer serves because he was honorably discharged a few years back. Ashlyn, however, continues to advance in her military career.

When it’s just Blake and Bacon together at home, the two wait anxiously for their family to be complete once more.

“Since Ashlyn is gone he’ll sit here on the carpet,” Blake said in a Welcome Home video. “He’ll look upstairs, he’ll look in the kitchen … he’ll smell her boots, he’ll sit in her chair and just sit.”

Do you have a close bond with a pet?

The sentiment is mutual as Ashlyn misses her boys more than ever when she’s away. “I always leave him (Bacon) a shirt … to lay on just to have me there with him,” she said.

Blake shared that he’s very supportive of his wife’s desire to continue moving forward in her career. “I’ve done all my stuff that I wanted to do and now it’s her turn,” he said.

Ashlyn loves what she does but when she reunites with her dog, it’s the best sight of all. “I opened the door and he came around the corner,” she explains.

“His eyes lit up! It was the cutest thing ever,” she says. “The thing that was missing in our family unit was a puppy.”

The staff sergeant expressed how happy she is that Blake and Bacon can keep each other company during the times when she can’t be at home.

According to Ashlyn, Blake feels that the pup is “the best thing (they’ve) ever done.” “You don’t really know what you’re missing until it’s there,” she said.

What a heartwarming reminder that sometimes a pet really does make a family whole. We’re sending hugs across the miles to these three. We hope they can be together again soon!
