After Year in Hospital, Marine Finally Returns Home & Surprises His Little Girl
It can happen in a blink. A moment that will forever alter the course of your life. For U.S. Marine Sgt. Camron Spiece, this moment occurred in October 2017.
The 25-year-old was involved in combat training on the base in Lejeune, North Carolina, at the time. While supervising a routine combat training exercise, things went horribly wrong.

Spiece had been loading a rocket launcher, something he told Lansing State Journal he’d done “800 times before.” But the launcher malfunctioned and the rocket exploded in the sergeant’s face.
He has no memory of what happened and was unconscious in the hospital for two days following the explosion.
It took a year of recovery and physical therapy before Spiece could go home following his medical discharge from the military. He served for six years.
A brain injury, nerve damage and PTSD are just a few of the horrors Spiece has had to endure. But this husband and father of two still had a happy ending in store — or beginning, depending on how you look at it.
On Oct. 25 he was finally able to return home to his family. He couldn’t wait to surprise his 4-year-old daughter, Graycen, at school.
Graycen attends Oakview South Elementary School in St. Johns, Michigan. She had no idea what awaited her in the school’s hallway that day.
Looking rather dapper in his official dress blues, Spiece anxiously anticipated the moment his little girl would wrap her arms around him for the first time in far too long.
Their reunion is heartwarming, to say the least. Watch as this precious girl runs to her daddy with the biggest grin ever.
This memory is certainly one these two will share and look back on for years to come. Though it’s been a rough road for Spiece, who says he still has nightmares, he’s glad for the time with his loved ones.
“I need to be here and see my kids,” he told Lansing State Journal. “I think I’m going to miss the military life, but I’m also excited to start this new chapter.”

Spiece’s story is inspiring. His positive outlook shows that there’s always an upside in even the direst of circumstances.
