Simon Cowell Donates Over $30,000 To Help Shut Down Dog Meat Farm in South Korea
While Simon Cowell is known for his in-your-face attitude, his most recent actions may surprise you.
Cowell is doing his part to stop a dog meat farm in South Korea from operating by donating over $30,000 to the Humane Society International, according to a Friday tweet from the organization.
HSI is a global charity that focuses on animal issues and was quick to show its appreciation for the large donation by Cowell.
According to HSI, the donation will save more than 200 dogs and puppies from a South Korean dog farm that breeds them for human consumption.
HSI has plans to visit the farm, rescue the dogs, and send them to a variety of countries such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and the Netherlands. Once there, the dogs will be able to recover and be adopted to loving families.

HSI has said that these animals spend their entire lives within the confines of metal cages and are then brought to slaughter.
“Simon’s generous donation means the world to us, and provides a huge boost to our appeal to close this horrendous dog meat farm,” Claire Bass, U.K. executive director at HSI, said in a statement.
“More than 200 dogs are languishing in the most appalling conditions, but we have a real chance to save them. … These poor dogs have had the worst lives so far, so we’re desperate to get them out of those dreadful cages and show them love, soft beds and loving arms for the first time in their lives.”
While Cowell’s donation will save many animals, a heartbreaking issue is still at hand.
In South Korea, there are currently 17,000 dog meat farms that breed 2.5 million dogs each year for consumption. In total, HSI has closed 12 dog factory farms in the country, saving almost 1400 furry friends.
Overall, there are 83 animal charities that are working to save dogs from these meat farms, according to People.
For HSI, closing these farms not only saves these dogs’ lives, but also allows farm owners to move towards farming for mushrooms or chilis instead.
HSI has high hopes that the South Korean government will help to phase out this dog killing industry, especially as the demand for dog meat declines.

“With every dog farm we close and every farmer we help switch to a more profitable, humane business, we’re showing the South Korean government that it’s possible to end this cruel trade,” Bass said.
Cowell has supported HSI’s cause in the past as well, speaking about it on the Good Morning Britain in 2017. On the show he said, eating a dog would be like “eating your friend.”
“It’s the fact you’re eating such a kind, helpless, sweet animal,” he said.
Cowell is the owner of two Yorkshire terriers that he has shown are the love of his life.
