Little Boy Calls '911' Asking for Cops to Come to His Birthday Party — So They Did

Share

One of the most refreshing things about kids is their perspective. Without the weight of bills, adult life, or experience, they make connections and decisions that can look precious to us.

They have such big imaginations, and they don’t see obstacles the way grown-ups do. That’s probably why one 5-year-old ended up doing what no adult would.

Zachary was excited about his birthday party. The young New Zealander was thrilled that the party was going to be police-themed.

And what would be better, he thought, than inviting the real police to the shindig? So he did.

Just like that, he picked up the phone and dialed the New Zealand version of 911, wanting to personally invite the police to his party.

When the phone rang back and this time Sarah, the boy’s mother, answered, she was appalled.

“I’m very sorry,” she said. “That was my nearly 5-year-old son, he was just telling me that he, um, wanted to invite the police to his birthday party.”

The mortified mother apologized. “I didn’t realize he was going to phone!”

“I don’t know if we’ll be able to make it, but I’ll put it in,” the woman on the other end of the line said.

On the day of Zachary’s celebration there was a knock at the door, and the birthday boy opened it up to see a group of policemen who had come to give him their best wishes.

At first the kiddo was rather bashful, and refused their request to come inside, but a gift sealed the deal. That wasn’t all they had planned for him.

“We’ve got some stuff outside if you want to come take a look at it?” one officer offered. “Maybe a little play around with some of our gear? Would you be interested in that?”

They put him in police gear and let him sit on their car. They even went so far as to fly a helicopter by, and everyone sang happy birthday.

It’s safe to say that this was a birthday that neither Zachary (nor his parents) will soon forget. The Auckland police posted to their Facebook page with a video of the whole affair.

“Kids do the darndest things… like calling 111 to invite the Police to their Birthday Party…” they wrote on the post. They do suggest, though, that next time Zachary send paper invitations.
