'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Saves Cyclist's Life from 4 Muggers

Sherlock Holmes: a compelling character in a time-honored series that has made it into bookshelves around the world over a century before Benedict Cumberbatch gave him a new face in the BBC’s “Sherlock.”

There have been many film adaptations of the stories, and there are die-hard fans of each version.

From a purely objective standpoint, of course, it’s difficult to compete with the complexity and creativity in the BBC’s modernized mini-series.

That’s how many people came to know the man whose name looks like a random assortment of consonants and vowels — as the brilliant but out-of-touch Sherlock Holmes.

Benedict Cumberbatch had a recent brush with the sort of problems his character would find himself in. He was taking an Uber to a club with his wife and was near Baker Street when the scene unfolded before them.

A deliveryman on a bike was being assaulted. Four thugs were surrounding him, and one bashed him over the head with a bottle.

Cumberbatch got out of the car and proceeded to assist the man, reportedly yelling, “Leave him alone!” Apparently, at first the thugs tried to fight him off, but then grew hesitant when they saw who they were facing.

They ran off, and Cumberbatch was fine. He checked to make sure the deliveryman was okay, too, before setting off again.

When reporters asked him why he’d intervened, his answer was simple enough: “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know …”

Their driver, Manuel Dias, didn’t know who his passengers were — until Cumberbatch got out and started fending off the attackers.

“I was taking Benedict and his wife to a club — but I didn’t know it was him at first,” Dias said. “I went to turn down into Marylebone High Street and we saw four guys were pushing around a Deliveroo cyclist.”

“My passenger jumped out, ran over and pulled the men away,” he added. “They turned towards him and things looked like getting worse, so I joined in.”

“Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless,” Dias said. “If he hadn’t stepped in, the cyclist could have been seriously injured.

“Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street.” Quite the story, indeed!
