Carrie Underwood Posts First Selfie Since Accident
Some readers may want to quibble with what I’m about to assert, but I’d still argue that image matters more in show business than anywhere else.
While a pretty face may not make a star, it certainly helps, and the public at large has come to expect our entertainers to have attractive features.
That’s why it must’ve been devastating to country star Carrie Underwood when she took a hard fall at her home in Nov. 2017.
A tumble down the stairs fractured her wrist, and the break was serious enough that it required surgery.
She injured herself more than that, though: The brown-eyed bombshell cut up her face so badly that she needed “40 and 50 stitches” on her face.
In fact, Underwood was wary about sharing the news about her lacerations. “When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different,” she said in January.
Well, the singer has finally posted the first picture of herself to Instagram since discussing her accident — and it’s not quite what anyone expected.
The black-and-white selfie shows Underwood and her husband, hockey player Mike Fisher.
There are two bright splashes of color in the otherwise monotone image, one a bright red painted X on Fisher’s hand and the other a cut-out X that Underwood positioned in front of her lower face.
Yes, I know, that might seem annoyingly coy, but Underwood’s seeming stunt is actually for a good cause.
The picture’s caption directs users to the Instagram account for END IT. The nonprofit is a coalition group dedicated to eradicating human trafficking worldwide.
“Together, we’re in it to win it!” Underwood wrote. “Help us shine a light on modern day slavery.”
Underwood has left fans guessing about the condition of her face since the accident, with only scarce appearances on social media.
On Dec. 27, 2017, she posted a cold-weather photo of herself bundled in a knit cap and scarf that revealed only her eyes.
A Feb. 10 snap of the singer exercising at home with her young son was a little more candid. However, Underwood still had her face turned away from the camera.
Is the American Idol and chart-topping star stringing fans along or experiencing some understandable shyness? I don’t know, but I love how she’s turning her personal pain toward encouraging others to support a worthy cause.
