Tiny Puppy Shakes Uncontrollably in Cop's Arms after Rescue from Frozen River

Share

Daytona Beach, Florida, is typically a place associated with warmth and relaxation. Just the name conjures up images of palm trees and the sparkling blue water.

However, for one tiny pit bull puppy, this was definitely not the Daytona Beach she experienced.

In January, temperatures had dropped below freezing, and she was fighting for her life in the waters of a river under a bridge.

The two Animal Control Officers, John Pearson and James Lee, who found the little puppy reported, “Eyes are open. Don’t know how long she’s been outside, but she is freezing. Trying to get him warm.”

They immediately wrapped the frozen puppy, now named River, in a blanket and snuggled her in their arms to share body heat.

The officer reported, “She was cold and wet. We’re taking care of it. It’s starting to warm up a little bit.”

Someone apparently saw the puppy struggling in the frozen river and called Animal Control. Thanks to them and these two officers, River was saved.

River was sent to a local animal shelter to recuperate. I’m sure she was showered with love and warmth there.

One particular Daytona Police Officer named Kera Cantrell continually visited River while she recovered. Cantrell was smitten, and decided to adopt her!

It seems that River is not the only defenseless animal to be abandoned under a bridge in Daytona Beach area.

In June of last year, a kitten was thrown over a bridge from a moving vehicle down to the asphalt below.

Michelle Steiner, two cars behind, saw the incident occur and pulled off the side of the road to rescue her. She named the kitten Lilo, nursed her back to health, and adopted her.

When asked about what inspired her to rescue the kitten, she replied with a quote that applies to both River and Lilo:

“Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind. She’s part of our family now.”

Steiner and Cantrell both created a family with their little vagabond furry friends.

It’s beautiful to see, and somehow Daytona Beach feels warm again.
