Eating 2 Avocados A Day 'Cures' Age 5 Girl of Seizures
Have you been avoiding high fat foods in order to maintain a healthy diet? Or perhaps you’ve heard of diets that depend on fats and kick carbs to the curb.
Fatty foods have a related-but-different reputation for this Australia-based family of four. It’s become something of a miracle, in fact.
We’ve often been told that a low-fat diet will make us more healthy. Well, for one little London native, a high-fat diet implemented by her parents virtually cured her from a disabling condition.
Aptly named Leafy Liu, the girl has been enjoying two avocados a day for the majority of her 5-year-old life, and the health affects have been astounding.
But what caused her family to turn to the mighty avocado? Well, when Leafy was 6 months old, she began experiencing seizures.
Her mother Claire reported, “We both hoped that she would grow out of it, and it’s not too uncommon for babies to have seizures.
“But three weeks later she had her second seizure, and it continued like that. Every 21 days or so, she would have another fit.”
It turned out that Leafy has epilepsy, which is a brain disorder that caused the 6-month-old to have multiple seizures — as many as 60 per day. The Liu family put her on multiple medications without success.
Eventually the family decided to move from London to Australia, hoping the more temperate climate would curb her symptoms. Unfortunately, they did not find this to be the case.
At their wits end, they turned to the internet and discovered that a special high-fat, low-carb diet has been known to treat epilepsy. Now enters the mighty avocado.
Avocados are well known for their health benefits, including the 20 naturally occurring vitamins and minerals they contain.
But they are admonished and sometimes avoided for their high content of fatty acids. For Leafy, those fatty acids are not only delicious, but they are also responsible for lowering her epileptic episodes.
Leafy has consumed roughly 3,000 avocados in her young life. Perhaps when she gets older Leafy will be looking for new recipes like this one to make eating avocados more exciting!
Leafy’s father, Justin, joyfully said, “We’re now at the point where she only has four seizures a year. It’s a miracle.
Almost as soon as she started on the diet, she felt fit, happy, healthier, more relaxed — everything you’d want for your little girl.”
Next time you’re deciding between an avocado or a rice cake, remember Leafy and her incredible recovery. Who knows what the wonderful avocado is doing for your body behind the scenes.
